Thank you to a couple of members on here - Farty and TORNADOS7 - for providing me with some pellets to try out. Here are the results. This is not a scientific test. I shot one magazine into each target from eight types of pellets. And I was surprised at the results. First of all, here are the targets. They were all shot identically...

No scope changes were made throughout my entire shooting session. All pellets were shot using the same magazine, the same shooting position - seated and rested and in the same weather conditions. What has surprised me most is that the AA Diabolo Field pellets were about the worst pellets for my rifle when I first bought it. How did that change? OK, yes, I know, I didn't put enough of each pellet through the rifle to line the barrel and all that stuff. But, this was just an experiment to see how different pellets react.

Some pellets were lighter (14gn), so they went higher, Some were heavier (16gn), so they went lower. But the results were pretty good. I zero at 25 metres and only do some target plinking, so I can't see the point of going out to another 10 yards. The AA Fields seem good enough for me at the moment. But your comment is quite valid.

I think, like everyone else, Ray, everyone eventually finds a pellet that suits their gun.
And it might be a different pellet for the same gun. You just have to give them a try :)

I use JSB 8.44's in my RM8, never had a bad batch, and the best would in still air, bench rested, shoot a ten shot group at 40 meters you could cover with a 5p, the worst pellet was a tin of garbage Pro Shot .177's purchased from Ramsbottom's, they looked nothing like the picture on the tin and the 40 meter group could just about be covered with a dustbin lid.

You're unlikely to go wrong with JSB/AA pellets, Tony...

That's the most strange thing about it all, RW. When I first bought the rifle the JSB and AA were the most inconsistent pellets I tried. So much so, that I gave up using them after about 100 shots and the tins were left on the shelf. That's why I was most surprised when I decided to compare all 8 of the variants I have. I always thought the RWS Superdome was best suited. Might have to do a bit of a rethink.
