1. The Forum Rules have undergone some minor changes and updates.  Please take the time to read them; it will only take a couple of minutes of your time. By doing so, you lessen the chance of incurring the wrath of the moderation team or making yourself look foolish to other members.

90% of users posting adverts in the Sales forums need to be reminded to read the rules as their posts are wrong.  This is unnecessarily time-consuming and will no longer happen - if your advert doesn't follow the Sales Rules it will be deleted and you'll have to start all over again.

  3. Dear members,

Our membership (like our country) consists of people from all walks of life; different in far more ways than can be listed here and each with a different view based on their experience of life - regardless of their colour, religion or cultural heritage. Every single person in the UK has been born of mixed race – we are a multi-coloured and multi-cultural country.

As many of you are aware there are a handful of individuals amongst this membership that persist in making provocative, inflammatory, racist and otherwise offensive comments. This has been happening across the forum to a certain degree but is most especially prevalent in the Adult section.

The moderation team has tried to stay on top of this, however unfortunately because of the ‘offensive’ nature of much of its content we don’t monitor the Adult section quite as much as perhaps we should. As a result much of this behaviour has gone unnoticed unless it has been reported to us. While the team always intended to take a "light touch" approach to the Adult section it would seem that some people aren’t quite adult enough to be left unmonitored after all.

This behaviour is, and always has been against Forum Rules as well as the specific stipulations of the Adults forum and it will no longer be tolerated. We feel it's time to draw a line in the sand and as such from this point onward offenders will receive an immediate and permanent ban from the forum.

In order for us to achieve our goal of restoring the forum to the friendly and tolerant place it once was, we ask that ALL members be mindful of the content they post and help us to stop unacceptable behaviour by using the 'Report' tool at the bottom of any offending post - the results of which can be seen only by Admin/Moderators.

You should all receive a copy of this message by PM.

  5. Postings on Politics, Religion & Controversial Off-Topic Material

The majority of users do not want to read about these subjects and people have left the forum as a result of it – this is after all an 'Airgun' Forum. It’s all very well to say they don’t have to read it if they don't want to, but as most of us use the ‘New Posts’ button there is no easy way to avoid it.

All AGF staff members are in favour of people being able to discuss what they want, but we have to draw the line somewhere if it is upsetting other users. We don’t want to read about these topics either.

IMPORTANT- The discussion of politics and religion is no longer allowed anywhere on the forum (including the Adult section).  The only exception is if it's airgun related - they must be put in the Airgun Related Politics section..

We will not tolerate bullying or personal attacks, racism or any other offensive 'isms'. we will remove these topics from the forum, we will not give you an area where you can abuse each other. We will not hesitate to ban offenders.

Well i picked this beauty up today as a swap for some old fishing gear i no longer use and its safe to say im over the mood especially at the condition the air rifle is in, no rust on the action the bluing is in great condition and the stock is in great condition apart from the light scuff marks but thats an easy fix.

Also does anyone know the name of the sight on it are ? if there is a name for them, not to sure i want to put a scope on it if im honest lol.

First of all if i sand the whole stock down can anyone recommend a product to use on it to get it looks great and protect it ?

And also can anyone point me in the right direction of finding out how old it is or telling me ? the serial number is 27850

If you're going to strip it it's a good idea to fit a spring guide as the osprey wasn't fitted with one from the factory

lovely gun the Osprey, My Dad has a .177, I love the balance, the way it cocks and the tap loading is really good, Just wish they spent a bit more time with the internals, a synthetic piston seal, spring guide and a decent trigger would have made all the difference.
That is a really nice example.

It's a Williams manufactured peep sight as Owain suggested. Yours appears to be a Beeman rebranded version. Available either with the quick adjust knurled knobs like yours, or screw adjusters which keep it a bit more streamlined and less easily altered when used in the field.

Variously called a: -Sports diopter, receiver sight, sport aperture sight, peep sight, and probably a few other things.

You can still buy Williams sights, although availability is limited in the UK (try Midway) and prices compared to the U.S are high, so as Dunks suggests don't lose them. Well suited to the Osprey IMO, and worth nearly as much as the rifle. :D

    Hi Paul

There's enough metal at the front of the piston to machine it to accept a Weihrauch 25mm piston seal.

The spring guide out of a Meteor can be altered to fit or a custom one made.

I quite like the trigger, but if you wanted to upgrade it, Chambers sell a two stage trigger group for the Vulcan which should fit the Osprey as well.

    All the best Mick

Cheers for that Mick, I can't tinker with the Osprey until it is officially passed onto me, the old fella has it mothballed with a nice anstuz diopter.
On your tinkering with the Osprey, any idea what stroke can be achieved and what sort of power?

Ive not long done my Vulcan, the stock was original, but a bit too orange/brown and shiny for my liking, its a nice dark oak colour now and finished with beeswax.

cant beat the old webleys for a good solid rifle.
    cheers

    Sorry thought I'd replied yesterday!!
Thrale's book says 1975 to 1984. lots of good info. PM me if you need any.
Interesting to you " the high No. 28386 probably one of the latest with slight production changes of Mk ll tap and a Beeeman (i.e. Williams) apeture sight.
I guess yours at '80/81 'cos it seems production stopped '82 but stock sold on to '84.
About 30 000 made in three versions.
I've got one complete blued finish and an action only painted finish.
P.S. tagging T20 tips there's Vulcan bits on fleabuy.

    Hi Paul

The piston and guide shown are out of a Hawk which have the same bore and stroke as the Osprey.

The hawk will easily stroke to 81mm but I'm not sure if the Osprey will do the same.

At 25mm bore X 81mm stroke you have the same dimensions as an early HW77. :)

The Hawk will go to 12ftlbs if you pay enough attention to detail --- the Osprey should get close but I don't know what the dimensions of the Osprey transfer port are.

    All the best Mick
