1. The Forum Rules have undergone some minor changes and updates.  Please take the time to read them; it will only take a couple of minutes of your time. By doing so, you lessen the chance of incurring the wrath of the moderation team or making yourself look foolish to other members.

90% of users posting adverts in the Sales forums need to be reminded to read the rules as their posts are wrong.  This is unnecessarily time-consuming and will no longer happen - if your advert doesn't follow the Sales Rules it will be deleted and you'll have to start all over again.

  3. Dear members,

Our membership (like our country) consists of people from all walks of life; different in far more ways than can be listed here and each with a different view based on their experience of life - regardless of their colour, religion or cultural heritage. Every single person in the UK has been born of mixed race – we are a multi-coloured and multi-cultural country.

As many of you are aware there are a handful of individuals amongst this membership that persist in making provocative, inflammatory, racist and otherwise offensive comments. This has been happening across the forum to a certain degree but is most especially prevalent in the Adult section.

The moderation team has tried to stay on top of this, however unfortunately because of the ‘offensive’ nature of much of its content we don’t monitor the Adult section quite as much as perhaps we should. As a result much of this behaviour has gone unnoticed unless it has been reported to us. While the team always intended to take a "light touch" approach to the Adult section it would seem that some people aren’t quite adult enough to be left unmonitored after all.

This behaviour is, and always has been against Forum Rules as well as the specific stipulations of the Adults forum and it will no longer be tolerated. We feel it's time to draw a line in the sand and as such from this point onward offenders will receive an immediate and permanent ban from the forum.

In order for us to achieve our goal of restoring the forum to the friendly and tolerant place it once was, we ask that ALL members be mindful of the content they post and help us to stop unacceptable behaviour by using the 'Report' tool at the bottom of any offending post - the results of which can be seen only by Admin/Moderators.

You should all receive a copy of this message by PM.

  5. Postings on Politics, Religion & Controversial Off-Topic Material

The majority of users do not want to read about these subjects and people have left the forum as a result of it – this is after all an 'Airgun' Forum. It’s all very well to say they don’t have to read it if they don't want to, but as most of us use the ‘New Posts’ button there is no easy way to avoid it.

All AGF staff members are in favour of people being able to discuss what they want, but we have to draw the line somewhere if it is upsetting other users. We don’t want to read about these topics either.

IMPORTANT- The discussion of politics and religion is no longer allowed anywhere on the forum (including the Adult section).  The only exception is if it's airgun related - they must be put in the Airgun Related Politics section..

We will not tolerate bullying or personal attacks, racism or any other offensive 'isms'. we will remove these topics from the forum, we will not give you an area where you can abuse each other. We will not hesitate to ban offenders.

I have been to a lot of shooting grounds and rarely comment on the forums about what I see. Some have zero consideration for safety and it is commonplace to have a rifle pointed in your face although this happens every week at every competition I have been to. This though is the duty of the visitors and not just the organisers to monitor. If you don't know the basics for safe handling of arms you shouldn't own them. Some are very lax, some are so regimental I just couldn't bear listening to the jumped up jobsworth banging on about how they were armourers/range marshals etc. But to me, the crucial requirement from a range is variety. If that course/range etc remains unchanged for too long then you won't keep the interest of the patrons.

Safety first, plenty of plinking/zero lane's , somewhere to sitdown under cover if its raining and to eat/ drink , distance markers on the zero range and preferably some big White boards to shoot at to help set scope up …. And a clean toilet ...Amazes me how people miss a great big hole between there legs and p**s all over the seat !

Thank you Milek, extremely valuable information mate. Thank you for taking the time to post.... I place safety as the most important followed closely by fun for those that love our sport as much as we do. One range I go to has the atmosphere of a funeral parlour, expensive too.

Maybe an idea for people who don't have a range nearby is to find out where the local army cadets or TA range is, my club uses "The Drill Hall" in Sevenoaks which is tucked away down a back road so you wouldn't even know it was there!
If they're suitable for 22lr then an air rifle would be no problem, might be a bit of extra income for them too?

Some of the range prices on this thread are shocking. If I were in a position where I had nowhere to shoot I would put out a call to like minded local shooters with a view to renting some land to start up a small club. Some of the best shooting grounds in the country can be rented for less than a grand a year.

    Cost.

My local is £10 an hour for non members. There is a 30 yard indoor range that sits about 4 shooters. And an outdoor range that'll sit about 12 or so, but is unkempt, ratty old targets etc, no stated rules let alone Marshalls etc. They simply don't care about airgun shooters despite taking their money. It drops to £5 a day for members, but they don't even offer a real annual membership. You pay £50 for a year's membership, but that ends in March. So you sign up in December, and the years membership you paid for still ends march the next year. I paid for a year's membership, they couldn't be bothered to even show me how to get to the indoor range, charged me £1 to fill my impact to 190 bar, I never went back :D

There are chairs, but no tables, there is a sort of scaffold frame that you use as a rest, or some people bring there own gun sticks, etc to shoot off. There is no flat surface, as such, to rest a bipod on, some blokes bring rest bags, etc and place them on the scaffolding, its all a bit Heath Robinson, but we seem to manage! Some peeps bring their own chairs too, those folding fishing ones with a little shelf on the side are handy for putting pellets on, etc.
I might have couple of pics of the range, hold on... 2nd pic shows the scaffold frame...(with my new 95 :thumb: )

Wow, that sounds proper rubbish. Yeah, some shooting clubs don’t give a toss. Perhaps they don’t realise how expensive many PCPs are, way more than many FACS!!!

Looks a little rough and ready but I don’t mind that, it’s the no benches and chairs that I wouldn’t get on with. My shooting whilst stood isn’t so good!!!

They're (Mendip shooting ground) almost entirely focused on clays and stag parties etc. They even have an HFT course but the staff member who took my money didn't even seem to know where it was

There are chairs but no table or bench rest, I use the scaffold pole as a rest or I take my Primus stick.... :thumb:
Ideally you want both chairs and a rest , board, table, etc... or some other flat surface...

My local range is attached to the local RFD which also has a fishing shop. £10 membership then £4 a visit for as long as you like till the shops shut. 10 lanes, semi covered, all with seats and benches. Lots of plinking targets and slots for 17cm cards. Max range is about 45m, retrievable targets up to 25m. Friendly staff in both the shops. Shooters of all kinds, 99 out of a 100 sound as a pound. I absolutely love it. That's how to do it, lovely little range near the town centre.

I was a member of a "more prestigious" club a few year back. Stunning location, nice clubhouse, indoor heated range. Only problem was you had to be a member of another shooting club before you could join, the indoor range was for the FT/sub 6 .177 only. The only range we could use was no better than my back yard and not as well maintained. Always seemed to have the feeling of the "Old Boys Club" about it. Some right snotty folk there. Went twice, didn't renew.

The former sounds great, the latter sounds like everything I hate about shooting clubs....
