I set up a new feeder with the trail cam last week, went back to check & retrieve camera today, looks like the squirrels have definitely sniffed it out. Topped back up & I predict a good bit of sport next week.

Doesn't take them long does it? :)

When I put a feeder in my back garden a few years ago, they were on it within an hour. They're all red here though, so I obviously don't shoot them.

It’s always a good feeling knowing that they have found your feeder, I like it when I check my trail cam and see them happily munching.
I’m no expert and I am happy to be corrected but wouldn’t it be better to have a trough at the bottom of the feeder rather than it all just falling through, again not trying to criticise only speaking from experience.

Yep thanks, there is a trough there, I just emptied the rest of the bag onto the table bit to get them started.

Never ever seen a red squirrel in the flesh.
Theres plenty of greys around my way, but I dont know of anyone who baits and shoots them.

They're great little critters - I always loved 'em even as a kid when I used to walk in Epping Forest with my parents, but now the greys have driven them all away or killed 'em. :(

If ever you're on the island come and visit - I've half a dozen regulars that are in my garden every day. They don't even take any notice of me now and quite often sit just a couple of feet away, but they always scarper when they see the dog. :D

    Sorry I couldn’t see it.
I’ve got some wood to build a new feeder tomorrow, this one is going to have a hinged lid over the trough, I’m hoping my camera will film them as they learn to open to get at the peanuts.

I'll see if I can capture some video footage next week (out of nuts ATM) - if I'm successful I'll start another thread about them.

I've inadvertently hijacked your thread here Glyn - sorry.

The Reds are stunningly beautiful, I have to shoot more greys, I have to shoot more greys, I have to shoot more greys.

That's a great mantra, keep at it and as soon as I feel the vibes I'll join in with you!
Four years of shooting them and I hardly ever see one in the garden now, but I know sooner or later they will be back. In the meantime we have had an explosion of songbirds and it's great to sit out there listening to them......apart from the pigeons .
I must shoot more pigeons, I must shoot more........

..... magpies : the (very large) garden perm I have whose owners are bird lovers has two of the black and white gits I've been after for a while and have now gone into silent mode at 4am to attack the song birds nests. Got to admire their intelligence, but I will 'ave them

You lucky boy. I love Reds after seeing them when I holidayed near Inverness. Made me hate greys so much more!
