1. The Forum Rules have undergone some minor changes and updates.  Please take the time to read them; it will only take a couple of minutes of your time. By doing so, you lessen the chance of incurring the wrath of the moderation team or making yourself look foolish to other members.

90% of users posting adverts in the Sales forums need to be reminded to read the rules as their posts are wrong.  This is unnecessarily time-consuming and will no longer happen - if your advert doesn't follow the Sales Rules it will be deleted and you'll have to start all over again.

  3. Dear members,

Our membership (like our country) consists of people from all walks of life; different in far more ways than can be listed here and each with a different view based on their experience of life - regardless of their colour, religion or cultural heritage. Every single person in the UK has been born of mixed race – we are a multi-coloured and multi-cultural country.

As many of you are aware there are a handful of individuals amongst this membership that persist in making provocative, inflammatory, racist and otherwise offensive comments. This has been happening across the forum to a certain degree but is most especially prevalent in the Adult section.

The moderation team has tried to stay on top of this, however unfortunately because of the ‘offensive’ nature of much of its content we don’t monitor the Adult section quite as much as perhaps we should. As a result much of this behaviour has gone unnoticed unless it has been reported to us. While the team always intended to take a "light touch" approach to the Adult section it would seem that some people aren’t quite adult enough to be left unmonitored after all.

This behaviour is, and always has been against Forum Rules as well as the specific stipulations of the Adults forum and it will no longer be tolerated. We feel it's time to draw a line in the sand and as such from this point onward offenders will receive an immediate and permanent ban from the forum.

In order for us to achieve our goal of restoring the forum to the friendly and tolerant place it once was, we ask that ALL members be mindful of the content they post and help us to stop unacceptable behaviour by using the 'Report' tool at the bottom of any offending post - the results of which can be seen only by Admin/Moderators.

You should all receive a copy of this message by PM.

  5. Postings on Politics, Religion & Controversial Off-Topic Material

The majority of users do not want to read about these subjects and people have left the forum as a result of it – this is after all an 'Airgun' Forum. It’s all very well to say they don’t have to read it if they don't want to, but as most of us use the ‘New Posts’ button there is no easy way to avoid it.

All AGF staff members are in favour of people being able to discuss what they want, but we have to draw the line somewhere if it is upsetting other users. We don’t want to read about these topics either.

IMPORTANT- The discussion of politics and religion is no longer allowed anywhere on the forum (including the Adult section).  The only exception is if it's airgun related - they must be put in the Airgun Related Politics section..

We will not tolerate bullying or personal attacks, racism or any other offensive 'isms'. we will remove these topics from the forum, we will not give you an area where you can abuse each other. We will not hesitate to ban offenders.

I applaud your optimism and wholeheartedly agree, although we all know at the soonest available opportunity it's going to be back to "business as usual"; well, with an added dash of financial suffery and totalitarianism.

This is possibly the most depressing thing about this situation personally; the virus is offering us both the carrot and the stick; and instead of taking the carrot we're going to keep demanding the stick until we're so weak that it's no longer necessary.

Over the last few days I’ve been out cycling and walking, but I can’t say I’ve noticed any difference at all in the air quality.
Maybe if I lived in a town or city I might have noticed?

Then maybe changes need to be made from the top? Change our ridiculous reliance on manufactured goods from China, start producing for ourselves, stop foreign industries buying up our companies and infrastructure, those that they already own should be taken back.
Put a limit on flights in future, encourage the work from home culture. Limit the amount of driven miles per car to stop wastage. Encourage self reliance as a country, get our borders controlled properly.
I really can see a time when the Chinese control everything and we will be mere puppets with them the puppet masters.
As for the carrot and stick situation, well there has always been dimwits, thickos and selfish sods in the world, unfortunately we're not allowed to cull them at times of crisis. We could make a start though, identify those that break the 2metre rule or drive non essential journeys, fine them first but then if they fall sick, refuse them treatment. Harsh? No, not when Drs are already choosing who can or can't have a ventilator.

Anyone noticed it's not rained since lockdown either ? Clouds hold water planes above them dumping fuel before landing (oil) lands on top of the clouds and forces the water down ? Wonder how many hundreds of thousands of litres of fuel were not getting covered in as particles now.

We live quite close to East Mids airport. Very quiet and today not a sound from the clay grounds a half a mile away.
My son got called out to an emergency at his works late the other night. A four mile drive, he says it was weird not a car or person anywhere.

I've lived in the country about 95 per cent of my life and now live in the suburbs. It's a damn sight quieter here than my later years in a rural area. When I'm back there shooting it's even more noticeable, especially traffic noise and even rush-hour hold-ups.

Occasionally the Emirates A380 glides over so low you can see the panel joints. It's uncannily quiet and looks to be going so slow that it may fall out of the sky.

From my perspective they seem to aim directly for the Lovell Telescope. On the other side of the hill on a clear day / night you can see them stacked up. It's amazing how much 'space' air ports need.

They change the approach route regularly to avoid annoying the same residents. Depending on wind direction they can swing around over Crewe, then turn again over Winsford for runway 2, the next path is over Whitchurch and Northwich. Other times they come in over Glossop and Stockport for runway 1.
One thing a pilot told me was that Manchester is always awkward to land at due to constant wind sheer off the Pennines, that's why they seem to hang at 100 feet over the runway then suddenly slam it down when the wind is right.

Yes. We can see when they have switched flight paths. When I was on call and going out in the middle of the night in winter there would be planes in every part of the sky coming from and going to Manchester.

If an aircraft needs to dump fuel it’s usually at a much lower altitude than cruise and if at all possible away from built up areas. Also, when a plane is in transit and at its cruising altitude, every single drop of fuel is being burnt so there aren’t any wet fuel particles being ejected out of the engine. I don’t think most folks realise that aircraft only use large quantities of fuel on take-off (roughly 3,000GPH per engine on a fully laden Airbus A350), once at cruising altitude the engines are throttled right back and use hardly any fuel at all, despite what the contrails might make you think. Jet engines are designed to operate most efficiently at high altitude hence the need for complex bleed air and variable stator vane systems to allow them to function in the thicker air at ground level. :thumb:

Fantastic information mate. My neighbour is a Rolls Royce engineer, he tells me the 900 series engine is so efficient, it makes two people travelling in a Ford Fiesta look wasteful.
