1. The Forum Rules have undergone some minor changes and updates.  Please take the time to read them; it will only take a couple of minutes of your time. By doing so, you lessen the chance of incurring the wrath of the moderation team or making yourself look foolish to other members.

90% of users posting adverts in the Sales forums need to be reminded to read the rules as their posts are wrong.  This is unnecessarily time-consuming and will no longer happen - if your advert doesn't follow the Sales Rules it will be deleted and you'll have to start all over again.

  3. Dear members,

Our membership (like our country) consists of people from all walks of life; different in far more ways than can be listed here and each with a different view based on their experience of life - regardless of their colour, religion or cultural heritage. Every single person in the UK has been born of mixed race – we are a multi-coloured and multi-cultural country.

As many of you are aware there are a handful of individuals amongst this membership that persist in making provocative, inflammatory, racist and otherwise offensive comments. This has been happening across the forum to a certain degree but is most especially prevalent in the Adult section.

The moderation team has tried to stay on top of this, however unfortunately because of the ‘offensive’ nature of much of its content we don’t monitor the Adult section quite as much as perhaps we should. As a result much of this behaviour has gone unnoticed unless it has been reported to us. While the team always intended to take a "light touch" approach to the Adult section it would seem that some people aren’t quite adult enough to be left unmonitored after all.

This behaviour is, and always has been against Forum Rules as well as the specific stipulations of the Adults forum and it will no longer be tolerated. We feel it's time to draw a line in the sand and as such from this point onward offenders will receive an immediate and permanent ban from the forum.

In order for us to achieve our goal of restoring the forum to the friendly and tolerant place it once was, we ask that ALL members be mindful of the content they post and help us to stop unacceptable behaviour by using the 'Report' tool at the bottom of any offending post - the results of which can be seen only by Admin/Moderators.

Shotgun newbie queries

Hi all - I have been shooting 12ft/lb air rifles for years and I am about to apply for my FAC to start using FAC air rifles - and I'm also considering getting a shotgun certificate, but I am a complete novice in that regard (have only shot a shotgun a few times, at clays). I currently use air rifles for shooting rabbits, squirrel, pigeons and corvids on a 23 acre farm. The ground I shoot on is a mix of fairly large fields, a small wooded valley and some wooded areas. I also shoot on a couple of local golf courses, but I will probably stick with air rifles there. The farm has a few houses around its borders, so I need to keep my shots reasonably quiet - especially as I shoot at night as well as during the day. So, please excuse my ignorance but I should be very grateful for any info on the following basics:

    1. I gather that a moderated shotgun is about as loud as an unmoderated springer air rifle; is that about right? I presume there is a very wide range of moderators - would I need to spend a fortune to get sound levels like that?

    2. is it safe to shoot quarry in trees with a shotgun (squirrel, pigeon, corvids) and is that likely to cause significant harm to the tree?

    3. what sort of range would you get from a moderated shotgun (for quarry) - some on the forums seem to say similar to 12ft/lb air rifle and some say not as much as that (I suspect the latter might be right)?

    4. possibly a stupid question, but is it possible to mount a torch on a shotgun for night use (or even night vision)?

    5. I presume ricochets are rarely a problem with shotguns (as they can be sometimes with air rifles)?

    6. final obvious question - but I presume that apart from being able to shoot moving targets, hunting with a shotgun is generally more effective than an air rifle (in terms of stopping power and the fact that I presume you do not need to land a head shot)?

    Thanks for any help!

    1. Yes that's about right they sound fairly much like an un moderated springer. You buy the gun ready moderated as the barrel is ported. Cost £400-£1500. Or you can buy a suitable gun and send it off to be moderated.
They can be made a little quieter if you require it by fitting a wad stripping choke and more baffles for about £180.

    2. Yes it's fine unless you are very close.

    3. Depends an caliber and cartridge roughly .410 = 40 yards.
    20 or 12 bore= 50yards as standard.
55-60 yards with upgraded choke ( patterns tighter you need to shoot more accurately)

    4. Yes for both lamp and NV units on the 12/ 20 bore pumps.
Singles, doubles and .410 pump will mount lamps ok. But hard to mount NV.

    5. Same as air rifles ricochet wise they will ricochet but not far. Unless you use big shot for some reason then they could ricochet a fair way. You won't ever need big shot.

    6. Correct. Example of .410 here.http://youtu.be/a_f6yIrurFg

    Look here vey good review.

    And here.

Silenced shotgun is just about the best tool to use on your golf courses in conjunction with a golf car, gator, quad, pickup, etc. One person drives one shoots. No need to stop to take the shot even if the rabbit is running. Keep going don't stop to pick rabbits up!!
Remember where you have killed rabbits, do a whole area the come back and pick up the rabbits.
    Cheers Andy
