If rural areas are so damned dangerous then should people living there be allowed to own firearms to defend themselves?

These days I think all police should be armed, however having said that I think our police force need better screening and better training.

There are already armed officers in all major cities, this plan is to have some in smaller towns as at the moment the ARV’s have to travel from the cities to more rural area’s, sometimes 50+ miles away..
Seems like a good idea to me as long as they get proper training..

When he said routinely armed I assumed he meant ALL police officers would carry guns, is that right Steve?

It isn't routine to have inner city police armed (not even taser) but we do have ARV's patrolling that can apparently arrive at the scene within minutes, I've had a few come out routinely when regular officers aren't available, their vehicles are a bit special and stand out like a rat turd in a bag of rice.

I doubt it would be all officers, probably just a few with the training who could be deployed when/if needed..
Thats what it sounded like from what i heard on the radio this morning..

You're right Rob, our police don't have an ingrained history of weapons/guns handling like they have in the US, I think they would have to pass some very stringent testing and evaluation before being allowed to carry them routinely, I would advocate for it but would need to be assured that they are more than adequately trained and reassessed at regular periods so that incidents like this don't happen -

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uk...cer-fires-gun-during-prize-winners-visit.html

I also don't believe that many of our police possess the correct aptitude to carry a firearm, my niece is going to be specialising in armed response soon after her move to her permanent force, as it stands I wouldn't trust her with a spud gun without supervison. Might sound harsh but her attitude is just not right yet...

    Agreed..
According to the head of the firearms department being interviewed he said that 50% of applicants dont get past the initial training and less than half of those that do end up becoming firearms officers...
It sounds like they are quite thorough in their selection process.

Yeah I saw that one, It would have been funny were it not for the danger he placed the kids in, it's beggar belief!

I'd trust nearly anyone on this forum to have better gun safety than many of these serving officers, certainly the members who are ex-military, they have a much better sense of gun security and safe handling, it's literally drilled into their brains!

Most police forces in Europe have carried firearms for decades, and you don't hear of many cases of bad calls etc and they also tend to get more respect, unlike our force which gets taunted by all the scrotes.

Not an early SA 80. The magazine would drop off and the rifle would probably discharge at the same time.
A mate of mine currently serving in the force who is approaching retirement, told me recently of the type/standard of new recruits they are getting. I was quite shocked in what he told me. More examples of the world gone mad, I will leave it there LOL.
Suffice to say, I hope they don't get firearms

    That's them LOL
I couldn't believe what he told me. One example was an officer calling in to be relieved from a shout and subsequently went off with stress. He didn't realise he would have to deal with confrontation. Eh? What?

What came to my mind first was why do rural cops need guns? Are they expecting something? So many plots foiled that we never hear the details of, something must be up!
I'd imagine your average terrorist would want to create mass carnage at a high profile event or area, not self detonate in rural Kent & knock old Ethels plant pots over!

Maybe they have terrorist's training camps in Kent hidden away, it could save them trying to get to Libya or elsewhere in the middles east and Kent's not as dangerous for the wannabes as Helmand or Syria and they can still get their macdonalds and Kentucky fried.
