1. The Forum Rules have undergone some minor changes and updates.  Please take the time to read them; it will only take a couple of minutes of your time. By doing so, you lessen the chance of incurring the wrath of the moderation team or making yourself look foolish to other members.

90% of users posting adverts in the Sales forums need to be reminded to read the rules as their posts are wrong.  This is unnecessarily time-consuming and will no longer happen - if your advert doesn't follow the Sales Rules it will be deleted and you'll have to start all over again.

  3. Dear members,

Our membership (like our country) consists of people from all walks of life; different in far more ways than can be listed here and each with a different view based on their experience of life - regardless of their colour, religion or cultural heritage. Every single person in the UK has been born of mixed race – we are a multi-coloured and multi-cultural country.

As many of you are aware there are a handful of individuals amongst this membership that persist in making provocative, inflammatory, racist and otherwise offensive comments. This has been happening across the forum to a certain degree but is most especially prevalent in the Adult section.

The moderation team has tried to stay on top of this, however unfortunately because of the ‘offensive’ nature of much of its content we don’t monitor the Adult section quite as much as perhaps we should. As a result much of this behaviour has gone unnoticed unless it has been reported to us. While the team always intended to take a "light touch" approach to the Adult section it would seem that some people aren’t quite adult enough to be left unmonitored after all.

This behaviour is, and always has been against Forum Rules as well as the specific stipulations of the Adults forum and it will no longer be tolerated. We feel it's time to draw a line in the sand and as such from this point onward offenders will receive an immediate and permanent ban from the forum.

In order for us to achieve our goal of restoring the forum to the friendly and tolerant place it once was, we ask that ALL members be mindful of the content they post and help us to stop unacceptable behaviour by using the 'Report' tool at the bottom of any offending post - the results of which can be seen only by Admin/Moderators.

You should all receive a copy of this message by PM.

  5. Postings on Politics, Religion & Controversial Off-Topic Material

The majority of users do not want to read about these subjects and people have left the forum as a result of it – this is after all an 'Airgun' Forum. It’s all very well to say they don’t have to read it if they don't want to, but as most of us use the ‘New Posts’ button there is no easy way to avoid it.

All AGF staff members are in favour of people being able to discuss what they want, but we have to draw the line somewhere if it is upsetting other users. We don’t want to read about these topics either.

IMPORTANT- The discussion of politics and religion is no longer allowed anywhere on the forum (including the Adult section).  The only exception is if it's airgun related - they must be put in the Airgun Related Politics section..

We will not tolerate bullying or personal attacks, racism or any other offensive 'isms'. we will remove these topics from the forum, we will not give you an area where you can abuse each other. We will not hesitate to ban offenders.

Ok, I feel dumb now. But in my defence I will say that I'm recently 'banned' from another site. I must say that if we have contributions from Tony Leach to to this forum then my ban feels like a promotion. I actually asked the other site for permission to post this same item so that I could get members opinions - they said that they would get back to me about my request but they didn't, I'm beginning to understand why they didn't.

Look forward to hearing from the man himself!

I don't know Tony other than from a few forum interactions, but I do know that Dave Price (Wonky Donky) rates him and his work, so in my book praise like that is praise indeed.

    Is there anything to patent?

May be great engineering etc but he's sleeved a cylinder and made a piston with an o ring. I'm not knocking the guy at all before anyone says it and I'm not belittling the work as it sounds smart.

It's even mentioned in the article it was being developed in the 80's by manufacturers.

Sounds like a nice shooting air gun. I'm assuming there must be a reason behind why the manufacturers don't implement it though. Main one is no doubt the biggest factor in competitive production business, manufacturing cost. But then again, isn't that the nice part of springers, tinkering? I can fully understand why people buy one and modify it to shoot smoothly. Guess the ideal is to buy a kit he makes to fit your gun. Much more fun than buying a gun already shooting perfectly! What on earth would you springer tinkerers do then haha.

The breakthrough was made years ago. Pity it wasnt researched a bit better:down:. I had a 52 sleeved down and short stroked by one of the top tuners/airrifle designers many years ago in my yoof:D. The same chap made several prototype 3/4" and 7/8" diameter piston springers. I shot a 7/8" piston one and was very impressed at the time. He was responsible for one of the worlds largest spring air rifle makers moving away from largepistons on their high power guns. All 25 or more years ago. Ho hum.:D

I've been watching this development on both forums for a while, sleeving down may be nothing new but this is an o-ring lightweight piston, very different main spring and the port shape, length and diameter, it's a whole NEW set of specifications brought together that if capitalised on could change springers forever.
Who wouldn't want a springer as light, small and accurate as a PCP. If you put a magazine on one it would be hard to justify buying a PCP with all the charging equipment cost and refilling the gun. Impressive work !

I hope one of the big manufacturer's will take this on and produce a rifle with these changes I'd be anxious to see this development.
It sounds great with more efficiency comes less recoil and weight.
The current crop of springers, seem over engineered to me and this could be a real innovation.

I wonder if this idea takes off if we'll all be trading in our PCP's and scrapping our divers bottles in favour of a simpler design?

    Ouch!

The winning formula - I like formulas!

What formula do you use to calculate efficiency?

I know it's output/input (x100%), but what calculation do you use for input?

IIRC Cloverleaf posted a thread describing how to calculate the input energy in ftlb via Spring dimensions when compressed.

Unfortunately I can't find the thread but if you contact him I'm sure he'll point you in the right direction.

Nice to see a discussion about the article on my pistons and my 77k, what the article failed to show was the piston is actually a little more special that the ones JB did (El Caro) the piston has a sliding inertia weight that actually stops piston bounce. The weight of the inertia is set to counter the pressure at piston stall and allows the piston to stop then rest without traveling backwards. I also have all the data which shows smaller diameter pistons actually make power easier with less effort than larger diameter pistons, and data to show how we could produce springers with above 60% efficiency and incapable of producing more than 12fpe.

The idea was a dead blow (which is nothing new) and is similar to the inertia Theoben used in the gas rams, however i used a spring instead of a ram.

I am a little further on than this now, i have something that could warrant a patent (although just registering the design may do) proof of concept is half done, then prototyping and testing in the springtime. The plan is then to finally build my own rifle and incorporate the technology into it.

If you want to shoot a rifle featuring the power plant from the 77k in the article im letting Transporter (Ray) have it for his 77, once its set up you will probably catch him shooting the gun at one of Micks events or as Rays local club.
