1. The Forum Rules have undergone some minor changes and updates.  Please take the time to read them; it will only take a couple of minutes of your time. By doing so, you lessen the chance of incurring the wrath of the moderation team or making yourself look foolish to other members.

90% of users posting adverts in the Sales forums need to be reminded to read the rules as their posts are wrong.  This is unnecessarily time-consuming and will no longer happen - if your advert doesn't follow the Sales Rules it will be deleted and you'll have to start all over again.

  3. Dear members,

Our membership (like our country) consists of people from all walks of life; different in far more ways than can be listed here and each with a different view based on their experience of life - regardless of their colour, religion or cultural heritage. Every single person in the UK has been born of mixed race – we are a multi-coloured and multi-cultural country.

As many of you are aware there are a handful of individuals amongst this membership that persist in making provocative, inflammatory, racist and otherwise offensive comments. This has been happening across the forum to a certain degree but is most especially prevalent in the Adult section.

The moderation team has tried to stay on top of this, however unfortunately because of the ‘offensive’ nature of much of its content we don’t monitor the Adult section quite as much as perhaps we should. As a result much of this behaviour has gone unnoticed unless it has been reported to us. While the team always intended to take a "light touch" approach to the Adult section it would seem that some people aren’t quite adult enough to be left unmonitored after all.

This behaviour is, and always has been against Forum Rules as well as the specific stipulations of the Adults forum and it will no longer be tolerated. We feel it's time to draw a line in the sand and as such from this point onward offenders will receive an immediate and permanent ban from the forum.

In order for us to achieve our goal of restoring the forum to the friendly and tolerant place it once was, we ask that ALL members be mindful of the content they post and help us to stop unacceptable behaviour by using the 'Report' tool at the bottom of any offending post - the results of which can be seen only by Admin/Moderators.

You should all receive a copy of this message by PM.

  5. Postings on Politics, Religion & Controversial Off-Topic Material

The majority of users do not want to read about these subjects and people have left the forum as a result of it – this is after all an 'Airgun' Forum. It’s all very well to say they don’t have to read it if they don't want to, but as most of us use the ‘New Posts’ button there is no easy way to avoid it.

All AGF staff members are in favour of people being able to discuss what they want, but we have to draw the line somewhere if it is upsetting other users. We don’t want to read about these topics either.

IMPORTANT- The discussion of politics and religion is no longer allowed anywhere on the forum (including the Adult section).  The only exception is if it's airgun related - they must be put in the Airgun Related Politics section..

We will not tolerate bullying or personal attacks, racism or any other offensive 'isms'. we will remove these topics from the forum, we will not give you an area where you can abuse each other. We will not hesitate to ban offenders.

When all said and done it's a 5"inch screen and they are all pretty much the same.

No, they're not even if the specification in the listing/advert claims that they are. Resolution is the main difference and to an extent determines the price with the optimum being 800x480. Unfortunately many claim this but are, in fact, only 320x240 which will give a slightly grainy and inferior picture. With these lcd screens each pixel is made up of 3 elements, one each for red, green and blue and some of the sellers claim these as individual pixels which they aren't. Some sellers will state they they have genuine 800x480 screens and some of these are trustworthy but equally they can be conned by the makers/wholesalers in China who either don't know or don't care what they are selling as very few buyers will be bothered to claim or complain. Often the boxes have a set of little white circles, one for each possible resolution, and the appropriate one is ticked - you can see the possibility for mistakes or fraud. Sure24 do sell one which is guaranteed to be 800x480 and good quality but it is more expensive.
As with televisions panel/screen size does afect the price and a 5" screen is the smallest that can reasonably accommodate 800x480, anything smaller will be at best 640x480 but more likely 320x240. If you have a half decent compact camera it's easy enough to chck the lcd screen resolution as the individual pixels can clearly be seen in a close up photo displayed on a computer monitor.
You will also find variation in the quality of the connecting cables, in some the conductors are so fine as to be barely visible and very difficult to strip insulation for soldering if you go down that route. The connectors also vary in quality.

A tip to strip fine wires is to gently burn the insulation off.

5” can be found in 800x480 but you won’t get a smaller one better than 640x480 but more likely 320x240.

The price is reasonable as long as it is 800x480 and you won't know that unless you check it unfortunately. Many of them are the same thing and even use the same photos and specification details, the sellers just go by the information they're given by their suppliers and don't know anything about the items.

There in lies the problem. One of the negative reviews says it's not 800x400. Finding it a bit of a minefield to be honest.

I think I said earlier that this is a common problem and often the sellers don't know. I would contact the seller and ask them straight out and if it should turn out to be something else then I would open a dispute (I would buy through ebay and paypal to get the protection). If it's not as described I'd want my money back and that shouldn't be a problem. Some of the ebay sellers did actually state that their screens are 800x480
One way to get a genuine 800x480 is to buy from Sure24, it will be more expensive but they do check that their kit is the correct spec.
The way that I check the resolution is I stick a piece of masking tape on the screen with marks exactly 1" apart, you can do it in 1 direction or both if you like. I then hook up a camera which is pointed at a plain wall and then I take a close up image of the screen making sure that it's properly focussed. When the image is opened in a photo editor you can enlarge it so that the pixels are easily counted and you can see how many there are to an inch and then work out how many there are on the screen.

It's quite possible that reviewer has no idea - or might have an agenda. I agree its a bit of a minefield: I usually buy five or ten at a time and copped for a batch of five to sample them at £13 ish each that look real s****y from a small off axis angle. I won't use them. Its one of the research overheads that responsible sellers take.

As for 3.5" monitors - they are passable... until the difference is seen when an 800x480 is used. Most cheap sellers use them and, not being rude - NV newbies are easily impressed. I was until I compared them. o_O

If you can get to meet locals with both types - ideally at the same time on an evening hunt I'd take the opportunity because some people find the radiation from near eye viewers very uncomfortable on the eye. They make mine sting and I'd have had to give up using night vision if that was all that was available.

I recently went shooting with someone using a brand new near eye type rig - I'll not name it because thats unfair: It stung my eye but not his - but he still returned it. He dislikes monitor types but said the image seen from my monitor looked superior. I put that down to seeing it with both eyes at about 10 inches away rather than at about 1 inch with one eye.
