90% of users posting adverts in the Sales forums need to be reminded to read the rules as their posts are wrong.  This is unnecessarily time-consuming and will no longer happen - if your advert doesn't follow the Sales Rules it will be deleted and you'll have to start all over again.

  3. Dear members,

Our membership (like our country) consists of people from all walks of life; different in far more ways than can be listed here and each with a different view based on their experience of life - regardless of their colour, religion or cultural heritage. Every single person in the UK has been born of mixed race – we are a multi-coloured and multi-cultural country.

As many of you are aware there are a handful of individuals amongst this membership that persist in making provocative, inflammatory, racist and otherwise offensive comments. This has been happening across the forum to a certain degree but is most especially prevalent in the Adult section.

The moderation team has tried to stay on top of this, however unfortunately because of the ‘offensive’ nature of much of its content we don’t monitor the Adult section quite as much as perhaps we should. As a result much of this behaviour has gone unnoticed unless it has been reported to us. While the team always intended to take a "light touch" approach to the Adult section it would seem that some people aren’t quite adult enough to be left unmonitored after all.

This behaviour is, and always has been against Forum Rules as well as the specific stipulations of the Adults forum and it will no longer be tolerated. We feel it's time to draw a line in the sand and as such from this point onward offenders will receive an immediate and permanent ban from the forum.

In order for us to achieve our goal of restoring the forum to the friendly and tolerant place it once was, we ask that ALL members be mindful of the content they post and help us to stop unacceptable behaviour by using the 'Report' tool at the bottom of any offending post - the results of which can be seen only by Admin/Moderators.

  5. Postings on Politics, Religion & Controversial Off-Topic Material

The majority of users do not want to read about these subjects and people have left the forum as a result of it – this is after all an 'Airgun' Forum. It’s all very well to say they don’t have to read it if they don't want to, but as most of us use the ‘New Posts’ button there is no easy way to avoid it.

All AGF staff members are in favour of people being able to discuss what they want, but we have to draw the line somewhere if it is upsetting other users. We don’t want to read about these topics either.

IMPORTANT- The discussion of politics and religion is no longer allowed anywhere on the forum (including the Adult section).  The only exception is if it's airgun related - they must be put in the Airgun Related Politics section..

We will not tolerate bullying or personal attacks, racism or any other offensive 'isms'. we will remove these topics from the forum, we will not give you an area where you can abuse each other. We will not hesitate to ban offenders.

I have found the 20g pump rather noisy compared to the O/U. The pump can handle small loads like 21g 7.5's but became loud with the gamebore 30g no.5's.

The pumps not 12gauge loud but the size of the mod.on the OU does allow the use of more cartridges an still remain quiet. The O/U can even give acceptable suppression with Eley high flyer 28gr 5 or 6 shot.

If your goal is as quiet as a 20 gauge you can get then you want a pump with a double baffle set and a wad slowing choke. About £200 extra. This gets you lots quieter than the O/U but a little heavier. ( you can’t do the mod on the O/U )
Standard shells will always bang a bit as the shot goes through the air that’s just the shot going through the sound barrier.

Gamebore 30g subsonic #5 are great cartridges and very very quiet and shoot great in both my 20g O/U and my 20g pump. Just cartridges will supply them. £344 per thousand. £98 for 250

Thanks, we have been comparing many cartridges and settled on the gamebore as the best for quiet pest control. My friend has the pump (standard hushpower) and I have the OU investarm. I also have the mossberg .410 hushpower. My mate was disappointed in the sound reduction from the pump compared to the OU, I mentioned the extra baffles and choke to him, does the wad slowing choke tighten the pattern further? because we found its already very tight.

Yes mine does tighten the pattern but I like to keep my shooting at the 30-50 yard mark so I really like this choke as it hits hard at the right range for me.

Other variants are available he would need to speak to a decent gunsmith less choke would probably mean less sound reduction???? as it works by a series of rings and serrations gripping the wad and diverting the gas through the barrel ports. The more the wad is domed over and gripped the quieter you would think???
Another couple of baffles or another set would make a difference without the choke if he chose that route.

Have you thought about buying just a moderator from gunroom and saddlery and fitting it to whichever single barrel or pump you want? They do one that fits over the barrel and clamps on or one that screws into the multi choke? You will probably find it’s much cheaper to buy a cheap pump or single barrel and a separate moderator. The mod was £165 last time I checked. Cheers

I'm very impressed with my Mossy 500 Hushpower 20, especially with Eley Subs. Still much reduced with standard carts.

To be properly effective the barrel needs to be ported and the moderator reflexes back over the ported part of the barrel.
The screw on type do work but are not as effective.

I've ended up buying a 2nd hand 20g Mossberg 500 Hushpower which came with 2 barrels (standard and moderated). I also picked up a slab of Gamebore Hushpower cartridges and they seem to be very effective and quiet:thumb:

I bought a Winchester from Range and Country, i found them to be very obliging with good deals but it's a bit of a pig to find with limited parking.

Great advice. I have a Mossberg three shot pump action moderated shotgun. It is not as quiet as i imagined as i owned a .410 Baikal before and using 3" subsonic cartridges it was no louder than a silenced air rifle! Even if i couldn,t get hold of subsonic cartidges the noise was extremely low. I would certainly be interested in a wad slowing choke and extra baffle if anyone could give me information on where to get them from.

I got my Mossberg from Simpsons of Newmarket and it only came with the moderated barrel. Does the extra barrel mean you have another entry on your shotgun certificate similar to the FAC?

Oooooo so did mine. Bought it this week, 410 pump, in very nice condition. I have stripped the action,( i need more fingers) the Mod was a sod to pull apart with carbon coked around the tube, it must have taken me a hour to get the barrel with the baffle on, out of the tube.
I now look forward to a field test

Yes my friend, when I bought my Mossberg the RFD wrote down the serial no of the 500 shotgun and made a separate entry for the second barrel :thumb:

The collar which supports the moderator at the front is pressed on and the barrel is ported. When i stripped mine just to put copperslip on the threads of the moderator i found it was multichoke and had a full choke fitted. I think you can fit a 3/4 choke but anything losser than that may result in the shot hitting your baffles. I think i will look into the extended choke but if this is a wad stripping choke i would assume it would be ineffective with the fibre wad cartridges i am using. Whilst letting the moderator carbon up a bit to reduce the noise(i have also fitted a neoprene realtree cover which dulls the ringing sound a bit as well as not being so shiny to alert the prey) it is a fine balance between noise reduction and being unable to ever remove the moderator again.

Wipe a thin layer of copper slip on anything that gets comes with carbon, it should just flake away later when you remove the tube.
I should have added even when the grease gets burn d away the residue is a non stick coating, used on lead shot makers for molten lead to run and drip off.
