1. The Forum Rules have undergone some minor changes and updates.  Please take the time to read them; it will only take a couple of minutes of your time. By doing so, you lessen the chance of incurring the wrath of the moderation team or making yourself look foolish to other members.

90% of users posting adverts in the Sales forums need to be reminded to read the rules as their posts are wrong.  This is unnecessarily time-consuming and will no longer happen - if your advert doesn't follow the Sales Rules it will be deleted and you'll have to start all over again.

  3. Dear members,

Our membership (like our country) consists of people from all walks of life; different in far more ways than can be listed here and each with a different view based on their experience of life - regardless of their colour, religion or cultural heritage. Every single person in the UK has been born of mixed race – we are a multi-coloured and multi-cultural country.

As many of you are aware there are a handful of individuals amongst this membership that persist in making provocative, inflammatory, racist and otherwise offensive comments. This has been happening across the forum to a certain degree but is most especially prevalent in the Adult section.

The moderation team has tried to stay on top of this, however unfortunately because of the ‘offensive’ nature of much of its content we don’t monitor the Adult section quite as much as perhaps we should. As a result much of this behaviour has gone unnoticed unless it has been reported to us. While the team always intended to take a "light touch" approach to the Adult section it would seem that some people aren’t quite adult enough to be left unmonitored after all.

This behaviour is, and always has been against Forum Rules as well as the specific stipulations of the Adults forum and it will no longer be tolerated. We feel it's time to draw a line in the sand and as such from this point onward offenders will receive an immediate and permanent ban from the forum.

In order for us to achieve our goal of restoring the forum to the friendly and tolerant place it once was, we ask that ALL members be mindful of the content they post and help us to stop unacceptable behaviour by using the 'Report' tool at the bottom of any offending post - the results of which can be seen only by Admin/Moderators.

You should all receive a copy of this message by PM.

  5. Postings on Politics, Religion & Controversial Off-Topic Material

The majority of users do not want to read about these subjects and people have left the forum as a result of it – this is after all an 'Airgun' Forum. It’s all very well to say they don’t have to read it if they don't want to, but as most of us use the ‘New Posts’ button there is no easy way to avoid it.

All AGF staff members are in favour of people being able to discuss what they want, but we have to draw the line somewhere if it is upsetting other users. We don’t want to read about these topics either.

IMPORTANT- The discussion of politics and religion is no longer allowed anywhere on the forum (including the Adult section).  The only exception is if it's airgun related - they must be put in the Airgun Related Politics section..

We will not tolerate bullying or personal attacks, racism or any other offensive 'isms'. we will remove these topics from the forum, we will not give you an area where you can abuse each other. We will not hesitate to ban offenders.

I bought an old BSA Airsporter (VI) not so long ago to help sort out a rat problem at my yard.
It came with a little 4x20 scope, but I never fitted it as I was only shooting at about 10 yards or less, so I've just been using the iron sights (with a reasonable amount of success).

But now the rats are getting a touch smarter and I now need to be further away, so today I decided to stick the scope on.

It took a fair while to zero it, as it was so far out, but between adjusting it I decided to take a break and see how the pellets group.

This was at 22 yards; is this reasonable grouping (considering I'm not used to a scope, and its only a little 'un)?

    I tried three pellets:
    S - RWS Superdomes
W - Bisley Wasp (far too light)
P - PowaPellets (or something, much heavier)

I've seen worse, but I'd expect every pellet to touch/ overlap and fit easily under a£1 coin...but all depends on gun/scope combo

True....at 22 yards I'd want all pellets on top of each other, under a 5p lol

Dont give up.....Superdomes look about the best group so you have your pellet type....the grouping could be down to your trigger pull/recoil/scope/posture....my next step would be a different scope

Agreed! Its an airsporter, not some fancy-pants girly pcp! This could've been an unsupported group with a gun that hasn't seen a tune in its 20 year life with a scope not worth as much as the pellets!

I for one would be proud of that as a standing group with such a beast!

(Nice to know I'm not the only one who can't achieve a 5p sized group at 50 yards standing every time!)

the superdomes 3 shots aint bad at all.. i'd say the other groups down to the pellets...

off hand or supported 3 pellets under a pound coin is good enough for rats...

My Hw99 can make a grouping like a PCP at 25 yards shooting seated at a table and resting my hand on a sand bag!

I have tuned it to fire very smoothly though and it is a very forgiving gun to shoot.

I'm not having a go at OP but personally I would want tighter groupings than he's achieved before taking on live quarry.

    Hello
After reading your request for advice and taking into account the effort of getting the picture on here
I would be sticking to the super domes as they grouped the best
I have never seen a 4 x 20 scope that was worth putting on any air rifle and feel a better scope of your choice could not do any harm
If you cannot replace the scope then put lots of pellets through the Airsporter until you are confident you can hit a pound coin with your pellets to ensure a clean kill on your problem rats, as a clean dispatch of your quarry is the ultimate goal
Practice and patience will sort you out
    Good Hunting Mate

    Cheers for the reply guys.

All shots were taken with me leaning (uncomfortably) over a wheelie bin!

The rifle is in poor condition, and I've not even cleaned the barrel, yet.

As said, I'm not used to scopes, so a better grouping may well be possible with someone used to them!

I'll see how I go with this scope before I sink money into a better one, but with that said I don't want one too magnified, as most shots will be 15-20 yards.

    That's a Wasp group alright.

I do a lot of ratting, I get a 20mm group at 20M & I'm happy with that, you need to upgrade your scope though but nothing too dramatic, it would be easy to end up with a scope worth more than the gun, I like Hawke myself - something like this: http://www.uttings.co.uk/p102743-hawke-sport-hd-4x32-rifle-scope/#.Uxqf0phxlXQ

RWS Superdomes are good in Airsporter's, & a lot of others too, but I've found these justify the extra price: http://www.uttings.co.uk/p114933-prometheus-defiant-vintage-pellets-22-x-500-prdev5-6/#.UxqhMZhxlXQ

When your gun was made British .22 was 22 hundredths of an inch, or 5.6mm, now they are a Euro .22 which is 5.5mm, the right size pellet should shrink the group size just on it's own.
