Atherton Indoor Range (AIR) Near Wigan

Hi everyone,

Been over to Atherton Indoor Range a few times in the last couple of weeks and thought I better give it a bit of a write up as there seems to be many people like me in the Lancashire/Greater Manchester are that have very limited choice when it comes to shooting clubs/rifle ranges.

Basically the range is across one floor of one very very large mill in Atherton near Wigan and has 2x 10m pistol type ranges and 1x rifle range with targets out to 55-60 yards with prone, standing or seated shooting. There must be enough room for 40 people at a guess.

I have only been to a few smaller ranges over the last couple of years but I can safely say its very different to what I have seen before. At a guess, there must be at least 50+ spinners of different types and sizes all set at different heights and distances with shed load of frames holding paper targets to zero in on. Basically even someone like me with a very short attention span will be able to lose a day at this place.

The owner (Ben) is a top guy who seems to spend his entire time helping people out which is a really nice thing to see, whether is chronoing, charging PCPs or helping the simple ones like me to zero a troublesome scope. Must also add (just in case Ben reads this) he is a pretty good shot. Almost as good as me. Also a few regulars that have been very helpful with me over the last couple of weeks so no doubt will give you a hand if required.

What else can I say. Lots of Fun, Nice sociable place, loads of target options for shooting pistols or rifles and more importantly not the usual boringly serious club atmosphere.

If anyone is in the area, take a look. You wont regret it.
Just in case anyone needs to know in advance the pricing is something like £7.50 for non members and £5.00 for members so not particularly expensive plus that's for a whole day if you have the stamina.

This is a fairly old thread. Unfortunately as you have said, Atherton indoor range has closed. Not good. No where decent to go shooting.
