    i have always soaked rabbit in salt water for the night out of habbit.

    the salt will change the water potential so any baceteria in their will lose water and become crenated and die.

    if you used say pure water from a bottle then the water potenial gradient would be the other way and the bacteria would continually be taking in water and become haemolysed and eventually burst.

    simply put salt stop bacteria from multipling by prevent them from them taking water,
