I love shooting squirrels. Probably the best sport for air rifles I reckon. Never fancied eating them myself though. They remind me too much of rats.
This lot would have made you a meal though....

Anyone on here tried Squirrel? It's none too bad I can tell you!
Our little country pub has a " you kill it, we'll cook it" evening for the locals. Took a load of squirrels in there and they were pan fried and handed around the locals. Not too bad at all for a first attempt. Not a huge amount of meat on them and the bones are small and sharp, but the meat is very dark and a little like a cross between lamb and beef.
I know in the deep south of America, they pan fry them as a little delicacy and Elvis's favourite treats was a cooked squirrel. Not sure of his recipe though.
One evening in the pub we were talking about this and a visiting lady said to me " ewww, what do they taste like?". I kept a dead pan face and said " not unlike Badger" . The look on her face was superb. I did explain in the end that NO, I had never eaten Badger
Give a squirrel a go, you may be surprised

The more people I meet, the more I like my dogs.
Outside of a dog, a book is a mans best friend, inside of a dog it's too dark to read.
I've never fancied it myself. Last week however I heard that the local farm shop was selling them at £4.50 each and couldn't get enough of them. Given that I shoot on land actually owned by the guy who also owns the farm shop I sense a little deal coming on.![]()
we had it for the first time friday night my 16 year old daughter would not touch it LOL but everyone else eat it and enjoyed it it will be on our menu again without doubt
my house is haunted! Every time I look in the mirror this old man comes and stands in front of me so I can't see my reflection!
I've never considered eating squirrel before reading this thread. Since then I've had a look around for recipes and spoke to one or two people including my next door neighbour who really wants to try it.
So today, I got two in two shots in two minutes - head and shoulder shots, dead before they hit the ground. I gutted them in the field and was pleasantly surprised at how little they smell compared to rabbits. My neighbour had warned me that they were really hard to skin so I decided to take them home where I had more cutlery. Problem was, little wife was due home from work so I really had to get on with it. She eats bunnies, but turned her nose up at the mention of squirrel. I can't even refer to venison as deer, so I always ask her; "Do you want venison tonight dear?"
Anyway, I got home fifteen minutes before she was due to arrive. First off I chopped the main incriminating evidence off - heads, feet and tails and binned them. I'd left the heart and livers in so I just needed to skin them. Bloody Hell! Have you tried it? The skin's like lino.I got a right dab on and did the first one the wrong way round, haunches first and lost the front legs as I pulled its pyjamas off.
Second one was just as hard but I got the pyjamas off in one piece after a lot of wrestling. I'd just binned the skins when little wife appeared on the drive.
I think I got away with it. 'Rabbit' stew tomorrow![]()
I've never tried it to be honest. What does it taste like ? can anyone give a comparison to another meat?![]()
