I use one for steaming the meat off a rabbit carcass for using elsewhere, put an inch of water in the bottom, raise the rabbit above the water level and its ready to fall off the bones in a couple of hour. Could always keep the water, chuck the meat back in and bail a load of veg in with a bottle of real ale and have a nice easy stew for starters

Well i am really pleased with myself, i was brought up old fasioned where the man works and the woman looks after the house so was never shown how to cook, therefore i feel i have acheived something, i have done my first slow cooker meal, all the veg was home grown, the pigeon and rabbit was shot and prepared by me, theres nowt like a free meal

I use our slow cooker for curries - turns the cheapest bit of lamb into a gourmet meal.

Essentially anything that's of a casserole nature then a slow cooker's great for it.

Best results are achieved when you do the browning and initial bringing to the boil by conventional methods first like thedalley says, then pop it onto the slow cooker and go do the other things in life. Return with heap-big appetite and slice of bread for "testing the gravy"

While I'm on a roll (mmmm.... dipped in gravy):

    Lidl Beanfeast:

500g of dried butter beans (or any dried bean TBH - I just use butter beans) - soak them overnight or you'll puke your ring, (I kid you not!!) - then drain/rinse them next day for the dish

    1 x Lidl chorizo - gorgeous - cut into 1cm chunks

2 x Lidl passata boxes (or the 25p Asda el-cheapo's - it matters not)

2 x tins of chopped tomatoes

A good squeeze of tomato purée - practically half a tube - in a measuring jug, add a pint of boiling water, stir until well mixed

A sprinkle of Cayenne pepper/paprika/chilli powder - to taste: all depends how hot you like your food.

    Some oregano

    Some "mixed herbs"

    3 x bay leaves

If there's room in the pot you can chuck some diced spuds & carrot in too for a bit of extra bulk but I usually don't.

No need to add any salt as the chorizo & the tom-purée take care of that for you

Bung the lot into the slow cooker, leave for the best part of the afternoon to simmer away (good excuse to take a gun out)

Return with heap-big appetite & ubiquitous slice of "test the gravy" bread.

Absolute win after a day out shooting in absolutely freezing weather!
