Has anybody ever thought about that?

I think that legalising handguns would be a bad way to go, if civilians can own them, then our Police forces must carry them in order to keep the balance. If we go that way, we'll end up like the US which would be no good thing!

The way this country currently is, we don't need handguns, so why should we have them?
Your wrong mate, what differance would legal handgun ownership make regarding crime.
The police didnt carry guns up "97" when we had our legally held handguns stolen from us by parliament so why would they need to now if handgun ownership was legalised again??.

The simple fact is that if hand guns were legal, many more people would own them, giving them potential to use them, with intent or not. People do stupid things when they panic, so what's to stop a house owner using a gun against someone breaking through the window in the middle of the night?

If I could buy a handgun legally chances are I would, not because I need it for "defense" or anything else, but because I like guns. There are many other people out there who are the same as me, and letting them own one would be irresponsible.

It doesn't matter if there's a system to keep records of who has what, things will still happen.

Those people who use air rifles to shoot cats and do other stupid things could, instead, use their dad's handgun.

brittain has all the guns it needs already.
we have deer hunting calibers and i dont theink theres anything else in the country that you would need a bigger cal. for.

the guns we have are fine its just that the laws are really tight.
as buzz said before if you just want a gun to protect your home then a shotgun isnt too hard to get hold of.

imagine you with a shotgun instead of a pistol as you have a burglar with his little potatoe peeler. oh they joy!!!!

thats a joke but you get the point. a shotgun is way scarier than any .45 ACP pistol round

You've got to be joking !! I know which I'd rather have for protection and if I could have a 45, I sure as hell would.

I don't think NEED comes into it A1, I think WANT should have some clout too. Why should we be about the only country in the World that are banned from legally owning handguns, especially as banning them has absolutely no positive effect on gun crime and does actually have several negative ones.

    Bang on the head Brian!.
I lost my 9mm Berretta 92FS and .357 Mag Ruger Redhawk back in 1997 through no fault of my own!.
A1 and Cog, sorry guys but your too young to have had the pleasure of legally shooting a handgun, if you had I guarentee you would have a different opinion!!..
With regards to your home defense comment, if push came to shove then hang your 12 gauge, give me a short shooter evertime.

I think in UK they are changing the law little by little so they will not have big problems from the users.
I do not know where it will end but the law as it is now in my opinion is just plain stubit.

Not everyone who wants a gun would be suitable to own one! I'd love to have one but at the end of the day, I wouldn't use it for anything constructive, only for fun.

So fun isn't constructive then Cog, I beg to differ and when you've gotten a few more years on your back I think you'll realise that fun is EVERYTHING.

Hmm, what's this "fun" Buzz? I have no idea what you're talking about.

By the way, you're still failing to recognize the fact that more guns = more people being killed by guns. Can you grasp that?

There are thousands of people out there who would get one, as the media would say, to "look cool" or to "get street cred" - what's a greater statement than a gun if you're say ... black African? That's a general rule of course.

No that's not racist, it's the way things are.
