side focus is no fun in the dark... last thing you need trying to hold the rifle with one hand while focusing with the other.

for lamping look for a 4x40 or something that you can set a low 4 or 5x power you dont need side focus, ordinary and cheaper ao set to and left at 30 yards will work just fine, you cant be adjusting stuff in the dark while a rabbit is in the beam... you cant see what your doing and you just dont have time

As above, have a look at fixed mag, something like a 6x40 or 6x42 - that's all I use on my rimfire and it works well out to 100+ yards, the other rimfire will be fitted with a 1.5-5x20, you don't need silly mag and SF it's just more to faf around with
I can't remember ever drawing £100 from the cash point after midnight for anything positive...

I love my Nikon scopes. have a look through the Pro Staff if you don't want to pay too much. Brilliantly simply, bright, clear image with excellent contrast. The BDC reticle suits the air rifle perfectly too - on the .20 cal I have it zeroed spot on at 30 yards, the first BDC circle below works at about 35 yards and the second around 45 yards - after that I am snookered on range! It is fixed parallax, but being 40mm, having the target focus set at about 35 yards and power on 5x I can see to shoot targets from about 15 feet to 50 yards, they are a bit soft after that, but then it doesn't worry me and if a target is a bit soft in view I know it is out of range. If it is in focus, it is in range - sense prevails for the rest.

The beauty of th eNikon is its clarity and the fact that you just lift the rifle and shoot.
    Pic of the reticle here:

After all these years i have finally found a reticle that suits my hunting needs! Mildots are too indistinct against shadowy trees or hedges, the BDC aiming marks are slightly silvered, so you either have a solid silhouette to see them good and dark, or a silvery illumination by ambient light. Just the job.

would love a nikon scope... for me to expensive though. For hunting i like a simple robust scope with fixed mag such as a 6x40.

Who makes a GOOD 6x40 at an affordable price?

    Swarovski 6x42 = £600 ish
I don't class Nikko, tasco, Hawke, MTC etc as GOOD scopes - some are quite pricey too, but not exactly good glass. Leupold make a 6x42, but again, 4x the price of the Pro Staff (£140)

leupold do an entry level 6x36 for £295 they also do a 3-9x40 for £220... if your on a budget though just buy a run of the mill 3-9x40 with ao for around £50 leave it on 5x or 6x power and ao set to 30 yards and your done.
the lower the magnification the brighter the image will be in relation to the objective size also the lower the magnification the deeper the depth of focus
