    Quick one about baiting rats

Hi just a quick one, im off to a new perm in about 15-20mins. I have no peanut butter in and its a bit of a treck to get some, the stables and fields i am going to also have a cattery on sight, i would have taken a pouch of my cats food down but am wondering if the rats will avoid the smell possibly thinking its a cat or 1 of the cats are about? if i dont use peanut butter or cat food any other suggestions of something i might have in the cupboards? thanks

Cat food will be worth a shot because the rats are probably used to it. Chocolate spread is a good thing to try.

probably too late to get to you in time but ive been using chocolate spread they seem to go for this all the time on the allotment and last weekend i had put choc spread on one stick and peanut butter on another, they were laid side by side but surprisingly the butter wasnt touched yet the spread was literally cleaned off the stick.

    hth

    cheers simon

On my perm they absolutely love peanut butter. It took a while for them to take it but the other night I turned up at 8. It had been baited at 6 and the bait was gone. I rebaited whilst there and within 10mins rats were on it. Id shot one and had a dry patch so walked round the field bait was still out. After a 20minute walk I came back it was clean again so I rebaited. I then turned the light off for a cuppa back on and it was gone again. They couldn't get enough that night. I get the stable owner to spread the peanut butter a few nights before I go so they are ready for it.

I put some of our horse feed out in my 'killing zone'. As it is something they are used to raiding for, it doesn't get them suspicious, whereas new bait seems to.

    Others mileage may vary....

Well i went up with a sachet of whiskers and a couple of choc digestives. Tried a few spots, put some bait down, waited a wile at each with no luck, eventually decided to go for a walk with the alecto and look into all the empty stables, on my return to my main spot i caught the glimpse of eyes in the light, i slowly walked over and picked my 95 up, flicked on the torch and realised how cold i actually was, looking down the scope you would think there was an earth quake going on, after a second i decided to stick my little bi pod on as the rat wasnt looking to go anywhere quick. I flicked the light back on and next thing the land owner has come out to see how im getting on and shouted 'jonny! how you getting on? fancy a cuppa?' too which she nearly got a .22 accupell between the eyes....rat gone and never returned over the next 30mins or so, by this time i was numb it had been over 3 hours...hopefully il get him tomorrow or sunday night when i return with my new red torch...this time i think il take a few different baits up, more layers and sit and wait patiently as i did go on a few wanders due to boredom this time and probably disturbed them

dog/cat food mixed with sweetcorn in a blender.
having no lumps will prevent the rats carrying the food away, they will have to sit in your kill zone which should give you plenty of time to get a shot off.
it also smells very strong and will soak in to anything you pour it on, meaning that the rats will still be attracted to your bait area long after the bait you put down has been eaten.

Well i took cat food and a few choc digestives and just crushed it together. Seen 1 rat and it actualy walked over the top of my bait on its travels else where. It wasnt interested in the slightest. Think i will pop in to perm with some peantut butter/choc spread n get owner to bait up 1 spot for the rest of the week then i will pop in at the weekend and see if anything shows

Hollands meat and potato pie is loved by the rats at my brothers place. I used to work it....bite for me, bite for them. They love it. Did try them on cheese and onion pie and they didn't like it. They hate ginsters.
