Foxing last night with new Sako Quad 22lr

Well took the Sako out for a zero and a spin last night and its lovely to shoot, smooth cycle and nice and quiet when shooting! Only downside is the upward cocking movement is very stiff so needs quite a bit of wearing in!

Within 10mins it was zero'd to 70 yards covering a thumbnail size, my scope is the limiting factor as trying to see a small cross with a fixed scope in the dark is quite tough lol. Its shoots brilliantly with the bipod but we need a bigger beam lol as out at these ranges now its not focused enough to see properly.

So the fox caller came out and we started getting settled and warm for the long wait (just to clear up we will only take foxes out to 60 yards with the rimfire but prefer around 40) within about 1 minute we heard the first bark so i got down on the gun and my mate gave a quick flash. Red eyes were sat about 120 yards towards the bottom of the hill, beam off caller back on and silence for about 5 minutes, caller off for 2 minutes quick flash, red eyes about 80 yards! We started to feel the excitement building, caller back on, quick beam flash, 70 yards and another pair of eyes round to the right at about 80 yards. So 10 yards to go couple of mouth squeaks, silence couple more squeaks, silence again next thing i hear in an attempted whisper "hi love im out foxing, yes there is one about 70 yards away". So i turn to look at him and mouth "what the f are you doing" beam goes on both eyes gone............

Still was a fun evening and cant wait to get out again, it was about minus 6 last night where we were, fingers were fine in my mac wets climatecs lol

    urgh, feel for you!
I've got a shooting buddy who is a bit like that. I have to ban him from taking his phone or he'll sit there texting while we wait for the bunnies or pigeons. Then when something does appear he tends to shout the name of said target whilst pointing and waving furiously at it and then run at it as if he were about to fix bayonet and charge the poor thing.

He's taking a lot of work, it's been frustrating at times, believe me!

My shooting buddy did that the other day whilst stalking a rabbit. All part of the fun though!

unlucky mate! whats your fox caller like? Does it mimic another fox or does it sound like a dying rabbit? I have one of them SilvaFox callers. It sounds horrible, like the worse noise you have heard a rabbit make, but 20 times louder! It actually comes with a hearing protection warning. Still havnt got my tickets through yet so havnt even tried it out really.

what police force do you come under? Were they happy to put fox on your ticket under .22lr? Im in West Mercia and the minimum here is .17hmr and I know from Kyska that where he is they insist on centrefire for fox but just over the border, the next county are happy with .22lr. Bit of a joke really that the rules on this varies so much from county to county.

My fox caller came from vids on youtube (dying rabbit noises) where people where shooting foxes and then i amended it in audacity and loaded it on to a playlist on my iphone with a wireless speaker (£18). Seems to do the job pretty well and it was free apart from a bit of my time and the speaker

Yep foxing is fine with a 22lr, they don't seem to mind providing its done close range. I come under the Gwent division.

i remember when.22 lr was ok for foxes when i had my first fac many years ago but thought you could only use centre fire now? silly as .22 lr does a fine job out to 60 yards especially if your using high velocity hp's.

Probably the best caller on the market once you master how to use it.
