Got my 1st fox tnite with the .22WMR

Hi guys not long back from bagging my 1st ever Charlie using my CZ .22WMR & 33gr Remington V-Max ammo.

Well chuffed coz I had planned the location where I was gonna lay in wait tnite as the wind is usually blowing the wrong way to use this particular spot.

I tucked myself into a corner of a field along a grass edge where we had seen a couple of fox previously but the wind is usually behind. Being a NE wind tnite meant it was straight into my face. Sat down with the rifle rested on some mini shooting sticks I've made, I gave a few mouth squeeks fairly loud to see what was about, followed by a few on my wam caller.

About 10mins passed and using my NV as a spotter I got buzzed by a barn owl who was after a crafty meal, then about another 5 mins or so spotted something coming down the grass headway about 200yds away. Gave a couple more blows on the wam and I kid you not this fox pelted towards me full bore. I slung the spotter down and lifted the rifle up, flicked the lamp on and it froze bang on 50yds away. If i'd taken longer I reckon I would have been his dinner!!

Took aim and bam, delivered a balistic tip right between the eyes and he dropped without a twitch. No exit wound I think the bullet did it's job and just mashed up the insides. Had a mooch about but nothing else to see so took some pics and home I came to a well earned Horlicks!!

As you can see he was a lovely specimen in great condition and would have been ideal for stuffing if I had the dosh but had to make do with keeping the tail as a momento,

    Cheers

I often see fox's when im out hunting around dusk with my sub 12ft lb rifles... In fact i've found on a few occasions me and the fox are stalking the same rabbit, i have had them in my crosshairs plenty of times but theres no way i would pull the trigger. Not only would a sub 12 rifle be inadequate.... I dont know if i could shoot a fox even if i had a rifle capable of doing so. Did you shoot it just for sport or for pest control reasons? well taken shot regardless.

Must have been for pest control reason's, a fox does not take any prisoner's, he-she is an all out killer .. if it gets in to a chicken coop, It bites off all of the chicken's heads, an doesn't take one chicken, if it get's in to your garden, it will kill any animal in your garden .. usually pet rabbits, 9 times out of 10 (same as the chickens) ... Then will leave your rabbit for you or your child to find, so is this a pest or a lovable looking wild animal

Good bit of shooting there, got one of the buggers starting to bother the farmer at my permission, only have a sub 12ft but my old man is a one man army, so have to tap his shoulder. The problem with fox's to me, is as a big big dog lover, i associate them with dogs (brought up as a townie) i know i will feel a bi guilty when we get him, but he's got to go

Nothing wrong with that mate shows a healthy respect for the quarry imo. I had a good look at him and spent a few moments reflecting what I'd done which I've never done before and toasted him with a tot of brandy from my hip flask. Doubt I'll do that the more I shoot but I do actually like the look of foxes, I think they are a nice animal, just a pity they are such a bother!!
