HW77k gets it first kill - wood pidgeon head shot

Took my 77k out hunting earlier in the woods i'm allowed to shoot in as scope is now zeroed bout as good as i can get it...spent probably an hour or so stalking about looking for squirrels or pidgies so decided to just sit with my back to a tree for a while, have a rest and quietly survey the tree tops. Sat for ages and was going to head home thinking it was just one of those days when nothing is there... but couldnt believe it when 2 wood pidgeons flew in and landed in a bushy tree top around 25 yards away and had the crosshair on them instantly. Was going to be a tricky shot as the birds were moving about and there was twigs and ivy leaves obscuring the majority of their bodies. I kept both birds in my sight but thought id missed my chance when one took off. The other bird remained however and after it moved along the branch a little i got a clear view of its head. I had a comfortable support for the rifle on my knee, and crosshair was steady so i had to take the shot. second after i pulled trigger the bird dropped stone dead through the branches with only a reflex flap of its wings . Unfortunately it got lodged in a crevice of lower branches and i had to climb up the tree to get the pidgeon, as i was climbing down its tail feathers came out lol.

Upon examining the pidgie the .22 pellet had blown the birds brain out whilst removing whole top of its head... was a quick clean kill but it was a brainy/bloody one. Cooked the pidgeon up for dinner a min ago.. lovely. Was first time i been hunting with my 77k .22... it sure is a heavy old gun but i can forgive that for its accuracy and power.

Well done! It is a great feeling isn't it, more so than had you made the same shot with a PCP. I can live with the smaller bags for the additional sense of achievement.

Nice shooting Tex. Usually loads of pigeons in the woods on my permissions but this mild weather is keeping them off the ivy and in the fields.

I've never had a pcp rifle, doubt i will either. so hunting with a springer or gas ram is all i know anyway. I'm happy with 1 or 2 pidgeons/rabbits for a hunt as i feel obliged to eat anything i kill. dont want to gready

Getting a good shot with a recoiling rifle is very satisfying but there is nothing like having the confidence of a PCP when taking long shots and knowing that the rock steady aim you have because it can be rested will find its mark.
