Where do you have to post the story? I have written several over the winter, but not put a single one in the tally section, because I am not interested in the tally.

Is there a seperate thread for the stories? Or would it be worth starting one? Or are you just going to monitor the hunting section for all stories?

Not really that fussed about winning a pull through, but it would be nice to join in with a story thread!

I have reposted this from my thread titled 'A Mid Week Ambush' -
    ***

It was a Wednesday afternoon and decided for a trip to the horse field to lend a hand and then see if I can shoot a rabbit or two. This field is my only permission at the moment but has many rabbits suitable for ambushing. It is a small field so the chances of stalking are minimal. The weather was perfect (with the exception it was bitterly cold), clear sky and no wind.

Once I had done my part down the yard I went to collect my HW100T from the car. Time was getting on, it was now 5pm and the sun had gone down, too dark without a light. Zero checked and MG125 gun light attached I made my way up to the top field currently that is currently not in use.

My approach to the top field is obscured by a row of hedges and trees so sometimes I am presented with a chance as I arrive to the hedges and carefully glimpse around them to catch out a rabbit or two. Today however I was to find an empty field. Even still I know they will come out soon so I took up my place laying prone just under the trees and bushes where I know of a couple of large warrens that are situated up field.

Now it is time to wait, keeping still and finding amusement in one’s own mind and letting the field “settle” and thus hopefully luring the rabbits out. After several minutes of stargazing picking out Orion and Jupiter I decided to click the light on to see what was on the field. Immediately I was presented with two rabbits, their single silver eyes hopping about. And almost immediately were spooked by the sudden light and decided to hastily make their way back into the bush. Light clicked off.

Now I am fairly new to this airgun hunting and so new to lamping too. However I have found that around 50% of the rabbits I have spotted using the lamp will bolt instantly or almost instantly so it is not possible to get a safe shot off in time. The other 50% just do not care nor react to it. At first I thought it was because when they are in a group of two or more they felt safety in numbers but experience has now taught me that some rabbits are just smarter than others. That and I probably need to invest in a filter for my lamp but at the prices I have seen them for I am going to settle with 50% of my quarry running until I can find a cheaper solution (any ideas?)

So I sat in and wait for another five to ten minutes before switching the lamp back on. It was getting very cold now and with a hat, jumper, jacket and a Helly Hanson top and legging base layer I was fairly warm but my hands and feet were really starting to feel it, despite the gloves and two socks (one pair made of thick wool). I clicked the lamp back on and there was a lone young rabbit sniffing around the grass and undisturbed by the light. With no range finder and a non AO scope (I wish I had invested in one of these now) I find it difficult to gauge range when lamping. On this occaision I glance to the side of the scope to see if I could see the target with my naked eye and did so, estimating the range to be 20 yards approximately, I gave the target a little hold under to compensate.

I took my shot and nearly jumped out of my skin. Never have I heard such a loud crack as I did that night. But at least I knew I had found my target. This resulted in the rabbit being instantly knocked down on its side without even a twitch. Usually I witness the “death stretch” where the hind legs go ridged then slowly extend then still. So a nice very clean kill indeed.

I switch the lamp off and waited a while longer before switching it on again to an empty field. At this point my hands were frozen and I couldn’t feel my feet. Decided to call it a day, cold and tired I collected my lone rabbit. Before leaving the field I shared my rabbit with foxy loxy leaving him a tasty treat, whilst I kept the meat. Will let you know what I Do with this soon.

    A good weekend.

Me and my pal got down to our permission about 11am sat. Set up camp and off we went in different directions. Within 15 mins i found myself about 50 yards from 3 bunnies, i couldnt stalk any closer without being seen cus i had 2 climb a fence. I used the fence to steady my aim. Pulled the trigger and saw the pellet hit about 2inch high on the mud mound behind it. The bunny went to sprint but stopped almost right away, if i had a pcp or co2 i would had another shot.

So i contnued and found myself in my fav spot looking along a fence line with loads of holes dug under it and the rabbits just pop up and varying ranges. Theres one hole about 6foot from my laying position but id never seen anything from this 1......until after about 40mins i literally blinked and when my eyes opened there was a rabbit sooo close staring right at me (side on). I had the butt in my shoulder but the muzzle was resting on the ground, i lifted it steadily up and found the head in my scope, all of witch took about 3-4 secs. Pull the trigger. Put the rifle dwn and get up 2 my knees expecting to find a dead rabbit ....nothing! I have no idea what happend. Either i missed (which i doubt) or it bolted as i pulled the trigger.

So i get back dwn and wait about another hr or so and another bunny stops right next to me on the other side of the fence 4ft from me. I turned my head and looked at it for a few secs but dint bother trying to bring the gun round. Didnt see anything else until it was almost dark could hardly see anything in my scope. Could just about make out the bunny which poped under the fence about 30-35 yards away......1 dead rabbit.

Went back to the tent skinned and gutted it and we made a rabbit stew (1st time iv had it actually).
Went out bout 1030 on my own (my pal was too cold) so i had to hold the torch under my rifle (big bloody thing). I didnt expect to get anything but iv never tried lamping so gave it ago. After walkin round for a while no luck everythin was too far away) i layd down on the floor and sat watching the stars .... duno how long for gotta be 30-40mins stood up and turned the torch on. I could see about 3, nearest was about 40 yards away, he started hopin left and i walked straight at it keepin the torch on making the light bob up and down in front of him which made him stop, i was now 30 yards away. Pulled the trigger down he went. Immediatly i knew it wasnt a clean kill, i ran over and dispatched it quickly. Very pleased with myself.
