I had my old motor broke into a few years ago, and the ******* nicked my radio and about 3 quid in change, i wasn't too bothered about the stuff they robbed i was more annoyed that the broke the window and it cost me over a ton to put right, one good thing though is that about 2 months later we had a knock on the door an a PC was there returning my nicked radio, so if they did get anything its certainly worth reporting as you never know you might just get it back.
i now drive an old P reg polo and i never lock it as i think if someone wants something that bad that they are prepared to smash the glass then id rather they just opened the door and took it thus saving me a big repair bill.
the wife's car is worth quite a bit more though so she keeps that one locked all the time.

The only time you should look down on someone is when your helping them up.
Might be worth getting one of them Key fob camera's, (there cheap as chips) to fix in the front/rear even on the road side where you have parked your car, at least you will get some footage of the little scum bags, Andy (the boss) put on in his van some time ago, very clear footage as I remember. (I'll see if I can find it)

I wouldn't have actually fired at them, but leading them to believe that I might would have been my choice.
then I would have handed them over to the police.
I have had a similar experience when I caught a guy about to take one of my rifles, I had left it on a style while I was stalking along a hedge line.
luckily I had a C02 pistol with me and I told him I would blow his head off if he didn't put it down, I may only have been armed with air rifles and a C02 pistol but he wasn't to know that. the pistol looks real enough.
he turned out to be a local thief wanted by the police, I later thought that I may have been in the wrong but the police were very grateful.
