We got stung by our electricity company a few years back - we were on a meter and had a letter saying that we owed the power company money (about 300 quid, as I remember) because our meter was set up wrongly and had been undercharging us.

I told them that we'd been paying for it at the price they'd been selling it for, and therefore they could try it with some other mug. Immediately they dropped ther demand to half the amount as a "gesture of goodwill". We told them that such an easy folding smacked of knowing that they were in the wrong and told them that it was their own hard luck. Never heard any more about it.

Re the gas bill: I used to work for British Gas, high level complaints - although your gas supplier's been an arse re the money (using estimates for your consumption were they? ) - as Paul P says, phone them, plead hardship/failure in their duty to take a proper meter reading (if it's estimates that have caused the underpayment)/willingness to pay but in 3 instalments.... should see you OK

That's not a bad idea - I think I will give them a ring and suggest that to them. The letter we got simply stated that they were going to take it out of the bank along with the normal DD - Hopefully they will let us split it into 2 or 3 payments. I have to say I have never had any trouble with them in the past.

Bloody energy companies
You try over paying them and then getting your money back! It's like getting blood out of a stone but when it's the other way round they want the money pronto
