Macdoog is spot on: compared to Victorian times (and previous time periods) we live in a relatively safe & stable society nowadays. It's a terrible thing to have happened to that poor girl; however, we've been doing unspeakable things to each other since the first weapon was wielded. Media exposure & the rapid spreading of tales of horror such as this has a lot to do with our perception of how safe/unsafe the world is.

We live in far safer times. We live longer, we have better standards of health and education, a better police force and court system. It amazes me that people who shudder at the horrors of today seem to forget about Jack the Ripper. If anyone has seen the photos of Mary Kelly.....nothing will ever compare to what happened to her. He was just one of numerous pyschopaths that have been around for hundreds of years.

Society is sick - kids have no peers to look to, just violent movies and games and no discipline at home or in school. Neither can you 'correct' their attitude in the street without being done. Succesive goverments have made the bed we lie in.
