Last night i went lamping with a friend at my local permission, its a rugby club with several large open fields and very few hedge rows making it a challenge to stalk during the day, so with this in mind i thought lamping would be a little easier. I was prepared for the added difficulty of judgeing distances in the dark, however i know the shoot very well so this helped a little. Last night was a very clear night no cloud cover at all and it seemed quite bright for 10 oclock at night. we did see pleanty of rabbits in the fields, and we were being very quiet no talking watching our footing, staying down wind etc. but we could not get within a 100yrds of any rabbits.

ok so my question is what weather conditions do you find best for lamping, i suspect the bunnies could see us coming a mile away and kept there distance before we even turned the torch on. although i havent been lamping before so im not sure if there is something wrong with our technique.

any help would be most welcome.

Hi Folks,
Can't believe this, but there I was out for a early morning stroll on one of my permissions, when I spy a grey squirrel, line it up, pop, perfect head shot, in the right eye, out the left ear (along with some grey matter) it drops to the ground, twitches a little then off to the great acorn in the sky........or not!
I continue on my permission then return about 3 hours later only to find, it's still alive!!!! And trying to walk off, but obviously brain damaged! WTH!!! I quickly apply another AA fields to the skull n job done.
Has anyone ever heard of or seen anything like this? It was a text book head shot, I can't see how it survived?
has anyone experienced this before?

Well all, went out for a dusk shoot, as i stated earlier, and what a major let down. The heavens absolutely opened enroute to the permission in question. Downer. A brief stalk about confirmed all the rabbit we'd came for had gone to ground to avoid the abismal weather. Not wanting to admit defeat we figured we'd take in the surrounding woodland on the shoot to take out some woodies at roost. Would you know it, more let down. Because of that dark low overhanging cloud we couldnt make out which were woodies and which were doves and besides that they were all spooking so damn easy that they just kept taking of clattering about for a few seconds and then settling, before going through the whole dance again. After around an hour and a half of waiting and stalking about me and my mate finally called it a day. Went out about 7 PM and returned around 2 hours after this...soaking wet from water running down the collar of my gortex jacket, bedraggled and dissapointed not to have bagged anything.

I guess this really is the flip side to what we do. The occasional let down. However i seriously doubt it'd ever stop me heading out at the next earliest opportunity :D.

Anyone else had a decent days shooting recently? care to share?

Hey there.

I've been doing some thinking (very dangerous) and have a couple of questions on pellets and calibres for hunting.

From what i understand there are 3 main pellet types, 'pointed', 'domed', and 'wadcutters'. From what i hear, the pointed are to be avoided as they are quite inaccurate (heard this is due to complicated manufacturing process) and can suffer 'over-penetration'.

The 'wadcutter' is highly accurate due to its shape but doesn't penetrate for hunting.

The domed pellet is what almost all of you use for hunting as it is a bit of both giving you accuracy and penetration.

Now, my question is;
If using the .177 calibre, which many of you say suffers from over-penetration and doesn't impart all its energy in the quarry, could you use the 'wadcutters'?

Assuming that its shape will prevent it from over-penetrating causing all its energy to be transmitted to the killzone.

I don't know if it makes sense or if i'm being a rambling fool, just a thought i had.

opinions please.
