Guide to Choosing a Silencer for an Airgun
Hi I thought after seeing so many adverts and threads regarding silencers which one is the best which one is the quietest? I decided to do this guide for help to newbies and even gun guru's.
No one silencer is the best or the quietest that is down to what your gun likes best. My advice is to ask your local gunshop what silencers they stock and can you test one on your gun to hear the sound. Remember if dry firing a pcp it will be even quieter when shooting a pellet through it plus indoors you will have echo. You will probably be more than likely buying a silencer for sole purpose of hunting so the rabbit doesn't bolt upon any instant sound. In the field the echo in a shop won't be heard so remember this.
There are that many available inc independent engineering companies making them inc several on here. I have tested all versions on all main brands. The main branded silencers I would say are
Hogan Decimeter
Weihrauch
Sak
Swift
Parker Hale
Daystate Airstream
Logun CCFC
FX Whisper
Air Arms
Milbro Huggett
Theoben Vortex
General Opinions - Other Gun Owners
You are best to ask other owners of your gun what they are using and see whats the general opinion. A gunshop may just sell you one they have in stock. A decent gunshop will carry stock of several brands so you can test. My testing I have found the Hogan Decimeter overall to be very quiet on most brands inc BSA, Webley, Air Arms, FX, Weihrauch, Theoben, Logun and many more. I would also recommend silencers from UK Neil I have tried several and he produces a very quiet version.
Re-zero Scope - New Silencer
You will need to rezero your scope every time you change your silencer and I recommend if using a 1/2 unf threaded silencer that it is removed if put in a gun bag. There is a high chance the gun bag is stored upright and gunbag is often squeezed into the boot or back seats of a car. The silencer often gets knocked thus knocking your barrel out a few degrees. If you don't want to remove your silencer every time invest in a hard plastic case shich will prevent this happening.
Silencer adaptors - I'm not a big fan of these as in my expeirance they sometimes will get knocked a few degrees thus possible clipping inside your silencer. This will cause accuracy issues if hunting you will get knocks here and there so it will happen. Buy a dedicated silencer that fits over the barrel is better unless your gun barrel is threaded for 1/2 unf then choose one of those.
Spring Airguns - Silencers
Now this is a big debate is it worth putting a silencer on a spring airgun. Well, in my opinion yes and no! If its loud its probably better spending money on tuning the gun to make it smoother and less recoil thus quieter action. On cheap springuns like SMK, Edgar Brothers, Gamo etc It will remove some decibels but nothing major to the human ear. Now to the rabbit you are hoping to have for dinner it will help slightly giving you an advantage in getting your stew! I tested the new slip on Weihrauch silencer on a HW77 and was totally amazed how effective it was it virtually reduced the sound to nothing. High end springers like TX200, Prosport and the Weihrauch & Diana family they will be effective even more so when the guns have been tuned. Lower budget spring guns you will get a slight reduction but nothing dramatic. A budget springer its worth tuning to make it quieter instead of spending £40 plus on a silencer that isn't going to make a high improvement.
Well hope that helps its all my own opinon its not the gospel. I may be right - I may be wrong but as stated I have been shooting along time and have and own alot of airguns. All the very best - welcome to AGF
