STUK Professional Silicone Lubricant your opinions please

    Hi,

Just bought this new 200ml can of STUK Professional Silicone Lubricant with PTE from The Yorkshire Trading Company in Cramlington and was wondering if anyone has tried it yet and if so what on?. It seems like good value for money at £2.99 so would like to use it on o-ring and spring rifle piston/compression chamber's. Your thought's please..

Silicone oil is excellent for `o` ring seals/ synthetic seals and plastics in general. However, do not use it on metal to metal surfaces as this is bad and will lead to `galling``.

Thanks for the advice, also got some lith-moly paste from Halfords today as well, cost £6.99 for a 500g tub, should last me a long time of airgun tinkering...

As its an aerosol I would keep it well away from your guns. It will get everywhere and will screw your metal moving parts. Use silicon grease for o rings and cv grease for metal to metal lubrication

The PTFE will reduce problems on metal to metal applications but is not as good as Molybdenum Disulphide for reducing wear under pressure, it's a compromise lubricant - best to use the right lube for the job ;-)

Lithium is the soap mixed with the oil that the grease carrying the Moly is based on - Lithium based greases stand up to high temperatures and resist breakdown over time far better than other greases,

it's not necessarily shite, just the wrong tool for the job, like digging a hole with a hammer... Crap for digging holes but it can still be a good hammer

If your thinking of using silicon on any moving part, don't do it. See my post.

I didn't know about the effects of silicone on metal to metal when I started this thread, pleased I didn't use any as it could have been quite costly, you learn something new on this forum every day. Might be a good idea for someone with a good knowledge of lubes to create a sticky of what to use and not to use, to guide people in the right direction and stop potential damage to their guns.
