Depends on what your using it for, the TX200hc is a wonderful gun and great shooter for power and accuracy, but weight allot, if your planning on using it for a full day of hunting and stalking I wouldn't recommend it as it can really kill your arms in the end, or kill your shoulder if you use a sling. But if your planning on using it at a range or from a hide using a shooting thumb stick its a wonderful gun.
On the other hand the HW is lighter but just as powerful and accurate so I consider better for using all day, but just doesn't have the same feel as the TX200hc.
But in the end its all based down to personal preference, there both great guns, easy to maintain and get parts for, and very reliable. I would go to your local FAD and hold them both, its not until you sholder the TX and hold for a minute as you would taking a standing shot when you really understand the weight behind it.
A gun is like a condom. I would rather have one, and not need it. Then need one, and not have it.

Id probably go for the tx200 out of the 2. A: because i reckon you could pick up a good 2nd hand one for alot cheaper than a HW98. B: I already have 2 HW's so would like a change if ever got another gun. Whilst i have never tried or owned either of the guns the HW98 is loosely based on the HW95 & The Tx200 is loosely based on the HW77. The fixed barrel underlever TX200 may have an edge on accuracy possibly but if its anything like the 77 it will be a heavy gun and more suited to static shooting. The HW98 would make a better hunting rifle as it would be lighter & more pointable. Both would be brilliant anyway! Think already mentioned... What about the prosport?

Theoben - Sirocco Classic H.E Carbine .177 *Hawke 3-9x40 IR*
Theoben - Sirocco Countryman Carbine .177 80's model

I never really found any problem with my 97K, which I would say is up there with the heavy rifles.
the worst thing I had was the fact the my left hand (I'm right handed) was quite sore from using the underlever for the first time. obviously because you have to hold the underlever one way to release it and then another way to actually cock the rifle.

I agree completely, the 97K is an amazing gun, but I just fell in love with my tx, but if I had the cash I would have both.
And I can understand, im a righty, but the underlever does take some force getting it back (but they are just under 12ftlb) but once you get used to it and get used to the best way to load it they are wonderful to operate.

Never shot a 98 but own a tx200hc,an hw80 and 97k,the tx200 feels basicaly like a tuned rifle from the box and you would not have to do anything to it apart from the occasional service, yes its on the heavy side but i find it VERY accurate and smooth to shoot, saying that my 97k is also a VERY nice rifle to shoot and is smoother than the tx but i have had it professionaly tuned by a tuner.

In a nutshell i would say get a tx if you want a rifle that is smooth from the off that youll never have to mess with or get a hw if you want a well made rifle that is better after tuning, the pro sport is better though like said
    .22 hw 97k(mike upton tuned)
    .177 mk3 tx200hc
    .177 hw80
    .177 hw 100t

Many thanks to everyone for all your help and advice......not really much in it between any of them. Would rather buy secondhand, so which ever comes up first in the best condition and price is the one i will get....or both eventually.
