    Home made piston sleeve?

Can't find a guide anywhere about making your own piston sleeve. I heard pop bottles or cans work. I can understand that they go inside the piston but I've heard about teeth being cut or something. Anyone know how to make one or have a guide to hand?

    Cheers.

Here is what a piston sleeve looks like.

The 'Teeth' are the notched bits at the end. The spring sits on these inside the piston and keeps the sleeve in place.DON'T use a coke /alu can -far too soft and the spring will chew it up and leave a mess of swarf inside the piston. You really need some proper steel 'shim stock' or similar of the correct thickness to make one.

I have used 0.5mm ptfe sheet which seems to be strong enough and is self lubricating.
You can buy it on e-bay.

Well done Dunkman, using cans is a big no no!

Also, I have had trouble with spring sleeves slipping out before, to cure this don't rely on the spring to hold it in place, stick a washer down in there then put the spring in, it spreads the load and holds on to the sleeve. If possible try not to put any grease between the sleeve and the washer but grease the end of the spring instead. That way the spring can still rotate (helping the torsional recoil) but the sleeve shouldn't slip.

    Hope that helps

I'm sure my 95K has a pop bottle sleeve fitted. Can you use a tough pop bottle? I don't quite understand where the teeth go. Do they go in head first towards the front of the piston or so they are sticking out the back? Wont the spring if they are sticking out the back rub down them when compressed?

Don't use a Can or pop bottle. The spring is one hel of a tough customer just waiting to chew up lesser mortal it encounters in the piston. Tuning kits DON'T come with pop bottle or coke can sleeves for a reason!

The teeth end goes in first, into the piston. Next in goes a washer as per Ians suggestion and then the spring. The spring is now holding the sleeve in the piston by pressing against the 'teeth'.

The sleeve takes up the tolerence between the spring and piston and also covers the cocking slot so the spring is now a snug fit with nothing nasty to rub against and this smooths and quietens the firing cycle.

I made one once from a one of those slim deodorant sprays that women usually have lurking around in the depths of their handbags. The metal is thicker and much firmer than any other that i could get my hands on at the time.Did the job very well, and even years later to this day its still holding up ok.
