    Dont paint a stock!!!!!!

If its a decent stock use stains and oil or just a decent walnut oil. As for sanding it if the old finish has been varnished you can get this stuff called Nitromose its a paint stripper on you brush it on leave it 5-10 min all the paint ect bubbles and you scrape it off down to the bare wood. The chequering is a bit harder work but you can use an old toothbrush to scrub the stuff out you will get there and then sand the stock to get a nice smooth finish before you apply oil. Dont sand the chequering or you wont have any left.
Have a look on youtube there are loads of videos about this.

hiya buddy! easiest way to do it is nitromors the paint off, dont sand yet. use a toothbrush as mentioned above to get any varnish etc from the chequering.
now sand everything except the chequering with 800 grit wet and dry.
add a quick coat of aerosol wood primer, from b&q. only 1 thin coat on the chequering mind you, or it will disappear!
sand gently with 1000 grit wet and dry to take out any surface imperfections.

rub over with a tack rag to remove dust and then your ready for your first coat of paint. DO NOT spray the chequering on your first coat. levae this untill the last 2 coats, and put it on sparingly or you'll lose the pattern.
hope this helps a bit mate. if you need any more info, PM me and i'll be happy to help.

how the hell can a normal tooth brush remove varnish and stain that usually needs sand paper to get rid of it?

lol you dont just use the toothbrush you use it with Nitromors and scrub that stuff in. It will remove anything and everything that stuff its reah harsh stuff. If you sandpaper your chequering you wont have any left so mission failed.

nitromors puh! you want caustic soda mixed with water to a paste so much better than nitromors and the smell wont knock you out.

plus its a damn site cheaper and will unblock your drains and pipes, be careful though it gets very bloody hot.
    cheers simon
