hello this is my first post on this forum. I am extremly new to air rifles and do not own one yet. Anyways i am interested in buying a quality but not crazy expensive air rifle. I have been looking at the Weihrauch 97k and the BSA Lightning XL. what do you guys think of the 2. I will obviously be using them for mainly hunting if not all hunting. Thanks guys, Bill

The 97 may be awkward for a first time airgunner to load .... bought a chinese version of one for the lads at the boat yard to use ... xs38 and they where scared to load it as it looks like it could eat your thumb
Your in the USA there are loads of choices ... the best bet is to go to a shop and pick up the rifles and get a feel for them
The 97K has an anti-bear-trap mechanism to prevent the loading bay from closing by accident.
Quality rifle... heavy mind you, but this helps it's accuracy. (I've got one)

Magician Essex / Poppy Prints / Wooden Gates
As your in the US of A. go for the Beeman R1/Weihrauch HW80. A straight forward airrifle, that you can cover all aspects of airgun shooting with, and learn good gun handling, its a best seller out there and a good one to start the sport.
The hw97k is in a totally different league to the BSA Lightning.
Don't even consider the Spanish made rifle. Get the HW. You will love it!
Another vote for the 97k, weihrauch quality is the best!

Was doing some work for a guy on Friday & the chat got around to shooting. "I've got an air rifle he says, bought it new a few years ago to shoot squirrels in the garden, but kept missing em , can you set the sights up for me". "I'll have a go I says" & went to pick it up. Well out from under his snooker table comes this HW97K with Simons 4x40 scope, covered in dust, "heres the pellets I bought with it"- tin nearly full. On getting it home checked the serial number & this dates it to 1995/96. The pellets were all oxidized so I binned them. Gave it a polish with an oily rag & it came up like new, not a mark on it. Tried it with the new H&N ftt's which my gun doesn't like, (after shooting spot on with the old style pellets/tins). The Gun deiselled several times, one time while I'd got the crombo on it showing 22.3 ft/lbs. Any way after half a tin off pellets later it settled down in the high 10's & I ended up doing this to shotgun cartridges at 26 yds in my garden. Shame Ive got to give it back really!
