Well, it arrived yesterday. It came by post and I didn't even have to sign for it.
First impressions;
The stock has been sanded right down to the point that even the checkering on the pistol grip has almost gone. It has been restained, but not oiled. It feels quite coarse and could really do with finishing. But it has no cracks, gouges or scrapes.
It has a brand new butt pad fitted.
The barrel and the cylinder have been abused. They both have scrapes and dents. All of the screw heads have been damaged. They could do with being replaced.
The cocking lever seems to rattle a bit. It works ok, but doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. When closing the barrel after loading, it needs to be slammed, so I am guessing the barrel catch spring may need replacing.
The breech seal has seen better days. This will be replaced shortly.
There seems to be some form of laminate over all of the metal work. The bluing has almost gone underneath, but everything looks sound. It is pretty clear that it is an old gun, but I don't know how old. I can't find a serial number. It was made in Germany. If it isn't an old gun, the previous owner needs a serious lesson in how to take care of things!
So, not the prettiest rifle in the world. But it didn't put me off at all, as the HW brand says it all. Even in it's current battered state, the quality feel much better than my Hatsan - even though it is considerably uglier!

I’ve just found what I was looking for, it was where I left it …
Before I fired it, I did think, "What the hell have I bought!?". It is UGLY!
Has anybody any suggestions about the loose cocking lever? It looks to me like it should have a couple of washers in there (barrel end), but I can't be sure.

Sounds like its working really well, and given time you will no doubt tart it back up to its original quality appearance, atb, ...mike...![]()

I have a great hw80 custom ingraved .22 barrel for sale if you want it
pm me if you are interested and ill send pictures ect....
I have been informed that the price I payed for this rifle was waaayyyy over what it is actually worth in it's current condition. When I ordered it, I was actually lead to believe that it had undergone restoration work. If it has, it was poorly done. I naively thought it had, as I am not experienced enough in that aspect of rifles. A second opinion was needed. And when that opinion said I had been ripped off big time, the only thing left to do was contact the retailer.
I have asked the retailer for a refund. If I do not get a satisfactory result, I will be naming and shaming the shop in question. I am waiting for a response.
I had my suspicions when they said they could deliver it direct to my door, bypassing the VRC act altogether. If I was to report them to the police, I fail to see how they could explain this, as my credit card clearly states that the payment went to the shop in question, and not an individual. This proves that they have broken the law as well as ripping me off.
I will update, and name and shame if neccessary, soon.
Girlypants. Thank you for your offer, but it would be like mounting a jewel on a lump of coal. It might be a very functional lump of coal, but it is a lump of coal all the same.

Hi, Im just reblueing my HW80K, and the breechblock has two very thin 1inch shims that go either side. but if your sending it back and i dont blame you, i would report it to the police for them sending it straight to you.
I bought a new breech seal and piston seal from ebay and if your wanting a very very good suplyer for the parts you kneed i will try and email you?
This is my third HW that i have had 2 HW80s nad a HW45, and they are worth the work and effort to bring them back upto standards. plug for a hefty discount off of a full refund if i was you.
thanks
L
Oh ps, if you want the thicknes of the 1 inch shims i have a micromiter and will check for you.

I am not giving up on a HW80, I just want one that is worth the price. I do like HW's very much. But I am left feeling done over by these theiving sods. If they offer to let me keep the rifle, while refunding a (VERY) large proportion of what they charged me, I may keep this one. If not, they are having it back so that I can buy one worthy of my hard earned cash. I am not working anymore, and I had to scrape every last penny I had to afford this, thinking I was getting a good deal. With my next purchase, I will be getting my mate to give his opinion before I part with any cash. Lesson learnt.
I have had a look at how much it would cost at Chambers to restore it back to it's former glory. Remembering that not one part of this gun is un-scratched/dented, I would need a new barrel (£74.90), cylinder (£110), trigger unit (£74.52) and stock (£129.80 - but not in stock). This is of coarse hoping that the internals don't need bits replacing and I recycle all of the existing screws and bolts. It is cheaper to buy a brand new HW80!
It's a shame you dont know someone who can check the barrel for you???? for accuracy. if you can send it down to sheffield for me i could check the accuracy for you when i put mine back together that is!! lol. i bought a Beechwood Casey gun blue kit for £17 and its got all the chemicals to strip the old Blueing off and to put the Perma Blue on with a very good leiflet on how to's.
unless the barrel is obviously bent. I work in a University and i can use a lathe so i just spun mine up on the lathe and used seriously fine wire wool and it brought it up like glass. Not saying it would yours tho mate as it sounds though they sprayed it with a lacquer or varnish. but i would imagine that eiven though it looks ugly beauty is only skin deep ?? know what im thinking???????
i will pm you some pic's of my HW before and after when ive done hopefully this weekend ????
the Shims are something like 0.010 of a mm thick and one inch diamiter. but im at work on Wednesday and i will re check with the Engineers.
Also i had a exploded diagram for the HW80 so will dig it out ans scan it if you want???
cheers
