i have not tried a webley stingray but have owned a bsa Lightning XL for few years in .177 which has been a great rifle. For rabbits alone a .22 would be possibly better for the added impact but i've shot a fair few bunnies with my .177. For a hunting begginer a 3-9 x 40 scope will be sufficient (theres often a fair price increase for scopes larger than 40mm i've noticed) .. a fixed mag 6 x 40 or even 4 x 40 would be fine as budget option... personally when im hunting i set my variable zoom scopes to x6 zoom and very rarely do i adjust it. The higher mag scopes such as garethf's 4-16 mag gameking are great for long range target shooting such as 50 yards out when what your aiming at is small. Unless your a very good shot though i wouldnt pull the trigger on a bunny at 50 yards as theres a high chance of missing or only injuring it... so the high mag isnt really needed for hunting with most air rifles.

I would agree with the 40mm objective thing too - greater depth of field than with a 50mm objective, but less light gathering for the same glass (a better 40 can be brighter than a cheap 50!)
You can change your scope from one rifle toanother, so buy a good one, then as you upgrade your rifle, you take th scope off an dput it on the new rifle. You can only shoot as well as you can see, so buy the best scope you possibly can and hang on to it - you get used to the sight picture too rather than having to get used to a new one each time. I like Nikon scopes myself and given the budget (I might yet do a bit on the side for a bit extra!) the Monarch 3-12 x 42 would be my number 1 choice, with the BDC reticle. fanatsti scope and the lenses are the same as Leupold use in their top line scopes (Nikon make the lenses for Leupold). Around £275 from the USA. Best additional £75 yu'll ever spend.
