    New User BSA T10 Scorpion

    Hi.

I am brand new to airguns and have recently ordered a BSA T10 Scorpion .22, which is due to arrive any day soon.

I chose this gun after it was recommended to me by another person in the shop and reading reviews about it on another website (only just found this site)

As I don't have a clue about airguns and have never owned one before, can anyone advise me about silencers, scopes and pellets? Any recommendations? Obviously I don't want to spend a fortune as it is my first one, but good value for money ones?

    Mainly hunting rabbits, magpies etc.

Also any views/opinions on the BSA T10 and what is the max lethal distance for shooting rabbits etc with this weapon?

    Thanks

    Hi edzblue
    Welcome to the forum.

    Silencers eh?
Well from my research the Weihrauch seems to get the best reviews for sound suppression. Having said that, I use an AA and have had a number of bunnies from the same firing position within seconds of each other - so the AA works too. Both in the region of £35 (..or I'll be corrected)

Scopes.. Lower end of the market is Hawke - I've a Hawke 3-9x40 and it is great no problems, but I've never looked through a "good" scope so don't know what I'm missing
The others share their views no doubt
Probably best to actually look through them in the guns shop and see what you like.

Pellets - what a can of worms! Each barrel will "like" a particular brand.
Two barrels could be from the same factory and off the production line in sequential order and like different brands.
Pelpax do small quantities of different brands so you can try them out and see what groups best with your barrel.
From there just use the best grouping pellet.

Some people like to use heavy pellets to give a big Thump... but that is no good if you are thumping the grass in front of the bunny. I hunt with a .177 and those weeny light weight pellets put the bunnies no problem so don't worry about weight, just get the best groups.

The BSAs, from what I have read are great guns. They can be improved dramatically for about £100 getting them "blueprinted" then they can be awesome - something to think about for the future.
More info on that on the "BSA owner group website" (google it)

Max distance is not defined by the gun but you and your skill.
You need to be hitting a target the size of a £1 coin nearly every time for hunting. As this is approx the size of the brain of a bunny.

If you can do that at 30m then great that is a good range, if it spreads outside that size at 35m then stick to 30m and keep practising!

    Stance will dictate a lot.
I'll sometimes go as far a 45m from prone (with a bi-pod) in perfect conditions.
    Kneeling.. for me 30m MAX
Standing arrhhh I'm crap standing and would prefer to drop to kneeling than take a stander. 20m maybe... reluctantly. (unless supported by a tree\fence\car etc)
95% or more of my hunting shots are off the bi-pod.

You gun will carry enough power to kill a bunny at over 60m but having the skill to take a bunny at 60m is not as common as people would have you believe (Yes, you will hear the stories of the 60m+ kills.. but you won't hear of the 5-8 bunnies they missed or worse maimed trying to get the one kill)
So work within your capabilities, be safe and have fun

    HTH

Blueprinting is basically making the gun work as per the engineers blueprints or plan. In an ideal world every gun would be perfect straight from the factory but mass production sees the end of that.

Some people send their guns to either John Bowkett who designs for BSA or a chap called Tench ( Simon? ) They will make your gun work the way the engineer envisaged.
